Mercedes Benze avantgarde 220 cdi A 2009 diesel w211
Hello, I hope someone may be able to help...My Mercedes Benz e220 2009 diesel Avantgarde Cdi A reg Ls59sux has stopped changing up gears. Think it’s stuck in 2nd gear. Does drive, reverse park. Also the comfort/sport button not working and lights on gearstick not working. Bought dipstick, checked fluid level, looked low so topped it up. Took it for a short drive and it still has same problem, reset the transmission which did help once before but not this time. I love this car and know I should put into a garage to get full filter and fluid change but because of the other 2 problems I’m thinking it is the automatic gearstick... or the 13 pin connector adapter plug and O ring or the valve body conductor plate or transmission control unit or the 20 other things... my head is spinning. Any suggestions? Anyone know any good, cheap Mercedes garages near Horsham, Crawley? Thank you so much. I’ve nearly googled myself to death

Hello and welcome,

Has it ever had the ATF changed?

Hi, no. I’ve only had it for a year. Do you think I should do that? Is this expensive... do you know. I will definitely look into this now. Thanks.

Sorry, I just topped the fluid up as I thought I’d do this first to see if it helped, as I suspected another issue because of comfort/ sport button not working and gear stick lights not working. But I will change fluid/ filter anon. Thanks again

You need a code reader icarsoft are the go to brand for MB. It could be the electro-plate speed sensors (look the code up for this) or as you say a few other things.

If the C/S button does not respond, then the box is in limp mode. There will be a code stored in the TCU, which will give you a good idea.

Did you check the level or just randomly top it up?
What was the fluid temp when you checked it?
Dropping the sump to change the filter will also give you a chance to check the electrical connector for leaks.

Sorry for delay, I dipped it cold first and it looked like too much fluid. Then I took it out steady and got it up to 80 degrees then dipped it again and it looked low, I thought, great, that’s the problem, so topped it up. Took it out again, wouldn’t change, so pulled over, tried to re set the transmission but it still won’t change.

Thank you. I am going to have to get someone with a better reader than mine to plug it in. Thanks for your advice.

How many miles has the car done.
Lots...I will get it changed as soon as I have enough money. It definitely does need doing. Brown. Yet the new fluid was brown too. Thought it would be pink. Mmm

Yes, I bought Mercedes Benz fluid and gave the guy my reg to make sure it was the correct type then watched about 10 videos on how to do it. It def needs fluid change and filter. I’m just plucking up the courage to ring a garage I don’t know and pray that they know what to do and charge a reasonable price.
