Any advice appreciated here,

my son stopped at a traffic light controlled roundabout as the lights changed to red. A truck in the next lane (Ford Iveco - Y931 GAE in case anyone is interested) decided not to stop & beat the lights. In his haste, he wandered over the white line and ran down the side of my sons car. Needless to say, he did not stop but his number was noted.

My son reported it to the place within 10 minutes, but they seemed less than interested, did not even bother to look at the damage to his car, and simply gave him a crime reference number.

The insurance assessor has been today, new mirror (electric/heated/expensive) required, new glass quarter panel (hit by mirror), new front wing, new front alloy, full right hand side respray due to scrapes and dents that go from rear bumper to front wing, not one panel untouched on a car that is only 6 months old.

Cannot get any info from the police, so we don't know if they have even contacted the driver or intend to do anything about it, even although he went through a red light, left the scene of an accident and the reg comes up as not insured on the insurance data base.

Not impressed with the way the police have handled this.

The Police have their hands full doing more important things - crackdowns on illegal number plates, measuring tints on windows, etc - and don't have time for trivia like this

perhaps we should go over to where all the immigrants are coming from and take advantage of the cheap land and resources? Once we have gone and stopped paying taxes, suddenly the UK won't seem such a desirable destination any more! All of this is IMHO of course, but I am getting fed up of paying for large numbers of other people who were not born here!

Don't start that one. I wasn't born in the UK, but I'm as British as you.

The world's a very big place these days, and don't forget how this country became wealthy.

Our wealth has been built - to a great extent - on the back of the cheap land 'over there' and the resources therein.

He should have said he'd been injured.

Apologies guys, couldn't help myself.

I've asked a mate who has 16 years experience - still serving - on Traffic and ARV to give this his considered opinion, including some more detail on the ownership. He's a PC so not so close enough to give a 'real world' rather than policy response.

Your son should have mentioned to the fuzz that he was sure he saw the driver holding a can of fosters................... but it could be red bull as most van drivers tend to have empty cans in the van...

It is a police matter if it's a hit and run. The other driver only has 24 hours to report that he hit another vehicle.

Would the truck driver know (s)he hit the car?

Doesn't matter does it.

The driver should be in control of his vehicle at all times. If he hits another vehicle he is obviously not in control - especially if he jumps a red light.

I think it is just a matter of putting it in the hands of your son's insurance company. You could try paying a fee to DVLA for the owners details and then following a civil prosecution - but that's so much grief I would suggest that neither you nor your son want.

In answer to the Police doing too much on crackdowns, I don't think they do anything at all. Round here its like the wild west. They should pull the illegal number plates, illegal windows (and I'll add one eyed lights and mobile phones to the list). Pull 'em by the score. Then pull 'em again when it's not fixed. Reason - it makes drivers much more uncertain of behaving irresponsibly and driving illegally.
I want the whole illegal behaviour in this country stamping out and I for one will vote for increased taxes to do it!
