Hi Shaun

I have used a box from the company www.tuningbox.com on my previous car, a 320d BMW, and also on my girlfriends current car a 320d coupe. it made a BIG difference. BHP up from 150 to 180, plus vastly improved mid range torque. It takes a day or two for the box to 'learn' about the car but after that WayHey!

5 mins plugs it in and out again if you're at all worried about warranty issues.

Also, to cap it all, our mpg improved by around 4mpg overall.

Can't rate them highly enough. Would honestly never buy another turbodiesel again without fitting a tuning box.

A remap will give a smoother power band, but as far as i know it will be picked up if your car is ever 'plugged in' under warranty.

The tuning boxes alter the common rail pressure sensor voltage reading as seen by the ECU, so "fooling" it into injecting more fuel into the engine (the ECU "knows" how much fuel is injected from a given combination of pressure and opening time for the injector).

The older ones do this in an analogue way - i.e. always change the voltage - and so overfuel at low revs/throttle causing increaded smoke (and presumably
dirtier oil and particle filter).

The newer digital ones selectively add fueling depending on the input voltage (which varies with load on the engine) and are therefore cleaner.

Bear in mind that if the box fails, the car will fail and the "check engine" light will be on because the ECU will have seen what looks like a pressure valve failure.

The car requires a dealer or indie with DAS to turn the light off and reset the codes - it will NOT reset itself when the box is removed.

Remaps from a decent tuner will not cause over fuelling issues and can't be found by DAS or Star in the dealer - they CAN be found by a Bosch specialist if the ECU is read (e.g. if the dealer calls for specialist/HQ support).

I have experience of both on the CDI V6 and:

the map just feels like a faster, more effortless version of the same car and the dragging flatspots before the 7G box changes down are gone. Fuel consumption slightly better.

the box is more "raw" and often upsets the auto gearbox as the power comes in. The box had more peak power than the map but didn't really suit the nature of the car.

With either change, you need to allow for ECU adaption before judging the results.....

Anyone fitting either without telling the insurer is "nuts" in my opinion. A 3rd party claim with the insurer having a get-out - undeclared mods DO allow them to void your cover - could lose you your house and drive you into bankruptcy.

Most insurers understand tuning and will slot you into the cost band of the car nearest to your tuned result.
