If you look at www.tdiclub.com - its a forum dedicated to diesel engines (mainly Volkswagen) but there is a lot of really useful information on adding turbos, vamping up power etc.

On a diesel, apart from the manufacturing of the exhaust manifold and exhaust downpipe unions for the Turbo, it should be a straight forward. You will need to use a wastegated turbo as the VNT turbo's require ECU control. You may need to upgrade the fuel pump, and will need to upgrade injector sizes.

In terms of fuel quantity and delivery, contact this guy diy@tdituning.pl who can reprogram the ECU map according to the information given (ie. injector size, fuel pump pressure, turbo pressure, wastegate pressure).

Good luck!

Would,nt you have to alter the engines compression ratio to suit the Turbo?

The 606 was just the same as the 617 and 602/3, the turbo engines. The turbo engines were reinforced and had piston cooling oil squirters.

Compression ratio didn't change much. CR actually went up on the 617 from 21:1 on the non-turbo to 21.5:1 on the turbo (Likely from the thicker piston with an oil cooling ring cast in).
