Turbo Blow

Hi and thanks in advance for any help........the attached are pics of my W210 creating a unique carbon footprint yesterday morning on the way to work. I lost power and immediately pulled in and took the keys out of the ignition...the engine kept on running for arround 3 minutes, chugging out huge amounts of smoke, which turned black just before the enging stopped....how do you stop an automatic diesel ?

Anyway garage says I need a new Turbo and pre cat (aparantly oil has run into it ?) and wants £2100.......I'm waiting for a call back from and Independent and just wondered if anyone on here as any ideas of tru costs...? can you buy re con turbos ?

Are you sure it's the turbo?

My Suburban (6.2 Diesel) once did this in California. Lots of white smoke and low, low power.
It turned out to be duff fuel picked up in the boonies. A drain and filter change got it purring again.

I just replaced one on an S320cdi.

Total bill includiong fitting and minus the CAT £990 inc of VAT and a new air mass sensor.

( I set fire to the cat to burn all of the old oil off)

You can stop the engine by opening the bonnet, and blocking the air intake, either at the side of the headlamp, or by opening the airbox and removing the filter, and blocking it there.

The reason the engine didn't shut off was because it was running off oil, sounds like oil from your turbo. Google 'runaway diesel' for more info.

Be careful when blocking the air intake to stop a diesel.
There is an awful lot of suction.
More than one person has found this out (not me) when sticking their hand over the intake of a small yacht diesel. A big car engine can suck in stuff which is very detrimental to it.

Yes you can

Just turn off the diesel supply. There is a screw type tap on top of the filter. Much safer.

Second stage of this fault is over speed and the inards of the engine getting out somewhat violently. You might not have time to stop it.

replace several turbos for the exact same problem,one even had oil dripping out of the tail pipes!!
