We have a 1994 M-Reg W124 Coupe, with front airbags for driver and passenger. In about two months time we'll have to be putting a baby seat in the car, and it doesn't look like the passenger airbag can be turned off. At least I can't find any mention of it in the manual or see any switch or keyhole that might do this.

Anyone know different ?

Putting the baby seat in the front would be most handy. It will fit in back, but space is tight in the Coupe, and it means pushing the passenger seat forward quite a bit.

The baby seat in question is a Bebe Confort Creatis seat.

Thanks

MB have never fitted a knock off switch I'm afraid. Current Mercs have a transducer set up which requires a Mercedes seat to work. There are after market knock out switches but these can be a bit pricey and don't appear to be available in the UK.

Don't be tempted to pull the fuse as this may not disable the airbag altogether.
The safest option is to put it in the back.

Eyelight, my current and previous C43's (MY 99 and MY 2000) had this transducer setup Don't know about yours.

We just use the back seat (easier, I know, as it's a 4 door). Once I had spent zillions on a compatible baby seat/stroller set up the last thing I wanted to do was to hand over £100's to Merc for an additional baby seat.

Thanks for all the info. I guess it'll be in the back seat then. Means whoever is in the front passenger seat will have to put up with less legroom than usual. More sacrifices with a baby !

It is very easy to remove the passenger airbag. Does NOT need removal of the dash.

Not sure however what effect it will have on the workings of the driver airbag and whether it will trigger the SRS light.

I would have thought that a link could be inserted into the SRS circuit to make up for lack of passenger airbag and to ensure the integrity of the circuit for the remaining airbag.

Needs a bit of research, but sure answers would be forthcoming.

I think you or wife will soon get tired of using rear seat for baby however - bit negative I know but just being realistic.

Regards

This argument has been up before, the 1994> car is not the same as the pre08 92 car where the air bag comes out easily. The whole dash on this car needs to come off, there are ealier postings on it.

Thanks for all info. My ratty old 5 series might be pressed into service, or maybe traded for another. Maybe an estate. It would be a shame to lose the Merc Coupe though.

We are talking about W124 coupe, post facelift model; and I have taken the passenger airbag out to replace the central air vent adjuster wheel lightbulb.

The bag assembly is held in place by a large and long bolt screwed upwards from the bottom of the dash on the passenger side.

Once the bolt is removed the bag assembly can be removed forward from the dash and the connector undone. I disconnetecd the battery first, and undid the safety link under the passenger side floor panel.

Very easy job.

Regards

Your argument not valid, because passenger airbags were not available on the older versions you are talking about.

Not sacrifices, just compromises :)

I haven't sacrficed my drinking time with my mates, just comprised - out the door, run to pub, drink 3 pints super fast and run home again.

Hello Keith, the other thread where this came up is here.
http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php

I know that the earlier pre oct 92 model had just a glove box. the car in the earlier thread was 95 E300, I spent a long time before on that car in the MB service program. OK maybe this one is ok and easy,on the 95 E300 car you take the steering wheel off as well,

If I am wrong here, then I am sorry, I will never forget the serch on the other one.

Best regards. Malcolm

If I had the first 6 numbers of the VIN I could do an exact search.
