Fully synthetic and low ash are two entirely different things.
If you need to use low ash oil, buy fully synthetic low ash. You just need to go by the recommended Mercedes oil rating like, 229.52 for example.

Your owners manual will tell you what spec of oil you need.
It will almost certainly be either MB229.51 or MB229.52

And yes, it needs to low ash as your car has a DPF.

You can't 'switch'. All low ash oils complying to the appropriate standards are are fully synthetic.

why would you want to change beyond whats recommended. Low ash oils are synthetic.
Read your manual and stick with whats there, noting that specs do get superceded.

I changed , that's because MB doesn't have the best C3 low ash manufacturer spec .

I'm using Valvoline SynPower XL-III C3 5W-30 which is on the MB approved list. I got National Auto service to do it when I had a pair of rear tyres from them. Saves me getting the Pela out.........

Engine oil is engine oil just some refinements to any particular requirements .

VW 504.00 507.00 is a very demanding spec because it's both a Pumpe Duse and a LongLife oil with a silly 19K / 2 year service interval that means it's high anti wear and will have far more friction modifiers , anti oxidents , detergents and dispersants within a higher concentration additive package.
Also it will contain in the base oil the top two basestocks which are real synthetics PAO and Esters meaning it will both flow well when cold and take higher thermal abuse .

Plus I have a near 10 year practical on a 19 year old high mileage 1.9 PD .
Too long an oil change or the wrong oil ( even the previous PD 505.01 spec was a lesser oil ) and the vulnerable narrow camshaft lobes flatten also bucket tappets can hole !

What the handbook says .

What I chose .

Also looks better for the dpf .

That 1.9 PD engine is mega. I put230k on my Golf GT, and it was still delivering 60mpg at the end.

I did just that and never looked back , nearly 10 years in the PD and nearly 4 in the OM651 .
