Hello, recently got a puncture on one of my front tyres, had it repaired and the patch is holding fine, but the stone that went in caused a bit of damage to the tread (continental eco-contact seem to be a bit soft compound)... Typically it's happened near to mot time and was wondering if this looks like the kind of damage that'd cause a fail?

cheers...

Yes, you will be lucky if the tester will not point it out to you. Probably you may be able to get away with it. Give it a go.

I would have thought that repair was marginal anyway, seems very close to the sidewall.

You could alway put the spare on for the MOT?

I'm very surprised you got a repair done too. I've had a couple of nails in tyres that close to the sidewall & all the tyre places refused to fix them.

hmm, it is the east end, you can get anything done for a tenner :) It didn't look that bad when I took it in, I think they made a bit of a pigs-ear of taking out what was in there.... guess it's new tyre time though...

I guess if you get it MOT'd at a tyre place then it's almost certain to fail! An MOT guide says: "Tyres fail if they have serious cuts, bulges or other damage" so, like much of the MOT, it's down to the opinion of the tester.

My daughter's SEAT Ibiza just failed MOT on a couple of points (probably not real and easily repaired in return for £200) but they also issued an advisory to say a rear tyre was perished.
When I picked the car up the MOT man had gone home and the service manager said nothing to worry about.
Took the wheel off at home and the tyre had the most horrendous looking open crack at the bottom of one of the tread grooves which ran the whole circumference of the tyre! I was quite shocked and in my opinion it warranted instant replacement.

Got a kerb damaged on the side wall, no tyre companies touch it because they said the side wall is the strained area.

The tyre in the picture has a liitle tread left anyway, so with the onset of Winter it will be a good move to replace it
