So on my e53,

Front passenger tyre is a landsail the 3 others are Yokohamas.

The landsail needs replacing but its opposite is just a few months old.

Do I replace the landsail with a Yokohama or do I get 2 x Michelin ps5 or 2 x Michelin ps4s’s?

Rear tyres have loads of tread left too.

Wallet is saying keep the extra money but head is saying do the Michelin thing now on the fronts and get the rears on Michelins when needed etc.

Will it be better to have same tyre model all around or different brands from and back aren’t that much of an issue (yes I’m conscious I’m running a not ideal setup).

You can have different tyres on but it’s not what I would advise.

Different tyres will react differently to aquaplaning, as well as as offering differing levels of grip. On anything, especially performance stuff I’d advise having the same unless, you want to intentionally alter what you have on each axle to help manipulate the dynamics.

Michelin PS all round round. Never ever skimp on rubber.

1 new Yokohama is cheaper than 2 new Michelins. I’ve not had Yokohama on a Merc but I’ve had them on other cars in the past and they performed very well.

Recently put Yokahamas on the rear of my SLK280, really pleased with them especially compared to the Hangkooks they replaced! Also had Yokos on my 968 coupe when I bought it 4 1/2 years old Nov 1998, grippy but wore quickly, 26k miles when I bought the car and already on her second set of Yoko rears, having failed her first MoT on rear tyre wear! I had to replace the rears before 40k miles.

As above, if the other 3 Yokos have plenty of tread, just replace the ditch finder and get your money's worth out of them.

The 968 is the closer comparison, E53 is a heavy 4 wheel drive known to shred it's boots if pushed hard.

I figured that, which is why I mentioned the 968 despite the "comparison" being over 20 years old! However, the change on the SLK from the Hankooks with their very stiff sidewalls (all round when I bought the car) to GY EfficientGrip fronts about 3 years ago and a few months ago Yoko 68Db 17's on the rear has transformed not just the car but the moaning and whining from the passenger seat occupant!

The E53 is usually sold with run flats so needs XL sidewalls for non run flats...

It came with Yokohama as the oem from factory.

I’ve never had them before but heard good things about them.

Shy’d away from continental / Pirelli/ Michelin a long time ago for various reasons

Liked the vredesteins but people swear by the ps’d
£80k+ performance car with cheap tyres, I guess if you do not drive it makes sense but they are your only point of contact...

factory oem was yoko’s.

Blame Mercedes for the choice of tyre brand, I’m querying strategy for transition onwards.

I can pull them all and replace with ps5’s or save some cash now and just get 1 x oem yoko or 2 x ps5’s/ps4s’s then 4 x ps5’s / ps4s’s later.

Lots of rave reviews of ps4s’s & vredesteins but not much on ps5’s.

It’s not a track car it’s a daily driver that isn’t driven every day.

I wouldn't call Yokohama budget. They're fitted as standard to many cars.

They are mid range but not premium according to:-

Not sure I would trust them on anything producing over 400bhp, I used them on my old Astra GTE and TR7 without issues...

Yes it's their first performance production trial, interesting that the specific tyre was prepared for Mercedes, see:-

Seems they are trying to up their reputation and using AMG for that. How have you found them when pushing hard?

I have not driven the PS5 yet, but, that will be next on the w221 and T5. I have used the 4’s on many cars. I hold them jointly with Good Eagle F1s which, are my default choice as Michelin raised the bar with this one and at 10/10s rain or shine, they tangibly pip the Eagle’s.

I tried many Michelins in the past but didn’t rate them as anything special as they performed well from new, but, hated heat cycles and degradation of performance as they wore. I found nothing to have the consistency of the Goodyear Eagles until the Michelin PS4 came along. These also perform consistently from cold and when hot, down to 1.8mm. The wear rates are also good.

I’ve had Yokos on few M5s and Bentley continentals and never got on with them (upto 7 years ago), even had the car spin out in traffic on me once on a dry day without any provocation at 25/30mph. What was worse was at such slow speed and despite the usual correction which, is second nature to deal with it, it seemed to be like skating on ice. Experienced some brutal understeer in the Bentleys in the wet and cold which was never replicated on my favourite rubber. Never had any issue with any Goodyear Eagle variant or Pilot Sport 4 sun, snow, rain, wet or cold.

I’d say get a matching set of Yokos or Michelin Pilots and sell the spare ones which, you will sell easily! Even a tyre centre will buy them off you but, you won’t get a good deal compared to selling privately for which you will see people queuing up to buy. Don’t be fooled by specialist fitment stuff either, it’s not always ‘best’.

I assumed they would be run flats but they are not.

My understanding was that if no spare you needed run flats but that is not the case.

Amg gle & gls got them too

Bit of a tricky one to quantify without trying other tyres.

With the air suspension and different settings in the different modes it can be a vastly different beast between comfort, individual, sport+ etc.

Any misgivings I’d attribute to that landsail at the moment. The annoying crabbing thing at low speeds and low temperatures has returned now it’s cold but apparently isn’t a thing with other brands of tyres.

I’m currently not perceiving any performance issues with tyres which is another reason to get views on changing as if I’m not going to notice a performance improvement then why bother?

Different end of the spectrum performance wise, my 2004 S211 E320CDI came with cheap tyres fitted. Landsail front and something else budget shelf on the rear, both sets fitted in pairs new by the previous owner, well within date and plenty of tread left when the car came to me.
Not instilling me with confidence, I explored the limits of those tyres wet and dry to know where I stood with them until I replaced the wheels and tyres. I was really impressed with both sets of tyres for budgets especially the Landsail and ran them a lot longer than I planned.
In your position I would be replacing the Landsail for a matching Yokohama and planning a replacement set of choice with any wheel refurbishment needed at a later date.
