An obvious question however, I have a 2011 SL350 which has had the original Pirelli tyres all round until yesterday, when it needed two new rear tyres.
Sadly, there were no replacement Pirellis available in my area for it, so I went for Goodyear F1 285/35R19 99Y as close replacements.
After a consistant 60 mph after collection, I am certain a road hum has developed. Lean forward not from the front but sat upright in the drivers seat it is fairly evident, probably rear.

Does anyone know the implications of a mix and match on this type of MB, and is it easier to get the front changed to Goodyear as well now that I have these back two on?
Any advice or previous experience would be warmly welcomed

I'm assuming they're Goodyear Assymetric 2s?

No issues with the different front and back as long as they meet the size, weight and speed capacity. Tyre manufactures spend a great deal of money getting OE fitment as they know many owners just keep the same tyres so they get many repeat sales.

The noise is most likely the new rear tyres - they are known to be noisy

Lost Kiwi,
Yes one hopes.
Thanks Blobcat, I'll let them wear in a bit, and see what happens.

The rear tyres on an R230 should be 285/30R19. Let the tyres run in for a few hundred miles.

No problem at all.

Why have you put the wrong size tyres on? As has been said they should be 285/30 R19 you have changed the circumference by 4.28%, the max recommended is 2.5% difference, can affect your gearing / gearbox etc

Only the Vito left! W639/1 OM646
... and very importantly this 'modification' (assuming the size you've fitted was never a standard fitment size) will affect your insurance (particularily if a potential large payout was ever needed).

JBell,
Thanks for that. Yes they are the wrong tyre size on the car. The old one's the dealership simply changed were Pirelli 285/35ZR19
103Y 's so they got the same size as was on it. The garage clearly understand my frustration and are now ordering in 285/30 rear and 255/19 fronts so they all sing off the same songsheet.
Seems to be a real shortage of Pirelli so my option is Continental......any views?

It appears that Goodyear are now on the Assymetric 5:

The Goodyear are much better rated and cheaper

JBell,

So could the roadnoise be due to the GOODYEAR's on there. Just looking back on the old paperwork. It was MB who fitted the 285/35's originally and replacements then followed sticking with Pirelli until yesterday when there were none to replace them with

Probably a different noise to the Pirelli, the Goodyear have a lower dB rating so should be quieter.

The Assymetric 3 is even quieter @70dB (so half as noisy)

Sorted I hope.................(road noise I mean).
I am having two PIRELLI 285/30 R19 which they have sourced, fitted later today. Sadly the supplier won't take the tyres back.
Anyone need 2 x Goodyears .................4 miles on the rubber?

To me it is just a different noise than you are used to, all tyres do it when you change particularly going from old tyres to new ones

I'm hoping it is the tyres at fault as it is quite noticable in the upright position in the cabin as a driver and defintely not bearings, and I haven't engineered an expensive mistake. Lean forward nothing, so I am putting "my money" on the tyre noise from the rear and the Goodyears!!

Are they 285/35 19s?
If so I'm interested
