Hi Folks.

2012 E class avantgarde 2.2 estate. Tyres are new 245 45 ZX 17 with recommended pressures of 38 psi, 2.6 bar.

This feels quite firm to me and seems to make the steering even lighter than it is. Never more than three occupants normally and no great loads, so could anyone advise if this pressure is too high please? Many thanks.

It may be worth experimenting with pressures a little lower than recommended as long as you monitor wear closely.

Similar to above.
I always play around with pressures to find what suits and it’s not uncommon for me to then adjust accordingly if carrying full cars loads etc. I do now run slightly lower pressures than what I used to due to the state of the roads and motorways.

Not sure what I am suppose to run my tyre pressure at but I keep mine (front and rear) at 34 - 36 PSI and haven't noticed any obvious issues thus far; although. I did manage to go through a brand new set of Michellin AS Sports within 15000 miles - just crappy tyres sorry to say, way too soft hence the poor wear life, even though they claim 45,000 miles :)

I now run Hancooks (American tyre brand) and get almost 50,000 miles out of them at the same PSI and driving.

I know you don’t like sarcasm in forums but I would regard this more as friendly banter?

There is no great sin in making a spelling error, especially if you don't speak proper English what like I do!

I use 33 on the same tyre size on my E320cdi , have done for 12 years with no issues

He was alluding to the fact that Hankooks are a S Korean company and not American.

Correct, as for "constantly taking snyde (sic) little sarcastic digs" I think he's confusing me with someone else.

In the Owners Manual of our 2010 E350, with the same size tyres as yours, it says that you can reduce pressures by 3psi for extra comfort, so long as speeds are kept below 220kph (!). We have done this and it is a little more comfortable, but we have gone back to 38psi for the better steering feel.

Many thanks grayb.

I will reduce to 36psi and see how that goes. The steering on this 'her indoors' E class is very 'American', as in extremely light without much feel at lower speeds although it gets progressively better as this increases. It's chalk and cheese compared with my old faithful 2003 E60 BMW. However it is a beautiful car to drive and the finish is second to none, especially now that I have replaced the usual dreaded faults of rear air bags, oil cooler and front discs and pads.

Which E-class is it? It may not have the 'Direct Steer' setup that was standard on the V6 and V8 models (https://emercedesbenz.com/autos/mer...mercedes-benz-e-class-chassis-and-suspension/). Steering on ours is nicely weighted, without being like a sports car, naturally.

It is the 2012 Avantgarde 2.2 diesel model. Don't think this one has the 'Direct Steer' set up.

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- ford kuga 65 plate awd powershift .
38 psi will increase as the tyres get heat , possibly seeing 42 psi. So I'd start at 34 psi cold .

I only ever set the pressures cold - and the handbook pressures are for cold tyres also. I think 34 cold will be a bit low for my liking...

I have an E220 CDI Cabriolet, staggered tyres (front/rear) 235/35/18 and 255/35/18 on the rear, and I run them all at 37 psi. On the sport edition the suspension is hard the tyres feel every stone bump however any lower and I risk cracking the alloys due to pot holes and poor road conditions.

I have now lowered the pressures to 36 psi and it seems to suit well. Slightly more feel in the steering and not as firm on the road.
