Just fitted 4 new Avon ZZ3 tyres onto my W210 E320cdi estate. What a revalation, these tyres are so quiet, the difference is amazing. Better still is the confidence in the wet - as you have probably noticed, the weather has been somewhat wet in the North Midlands, the car is so surefooted through the standing water - even puddles on the motorway (driving at max 65 due to conditions) are almost unnoticable.

The tryes which came off 1 * Bridgestone, 1 michelin pilot premacy, 1 * Linglong, 1 * Faken - I suppose you would expect an improvement after that lot.

One question: the inside shoulders of both front tyres were really badly worn, even though most of the tyre had lots of tread - is this common on W210 estates. I thought that I should get the tracking checked, although the car pulls straight and no other signs of tracking fault

Could this problem be caused by straddling road humps when driving over them?
This happened to my wife's Golf. Since not doing this, the problem has not returned.

Inside Wear

I have an E320 CDI and had the same problem with all 4 tyre’s worn on inside with plenty of tread in middle. Dealer said it was probably under-inflation though I tend to keep them high due to towing caravan (sorry) ! I had them all laser tracked and only the front were out so I think the road humps in last thread may be the answer, though doesn’t everyone try to straddle them? Just out of interest the car was fitted with Continentals and I have replaced them all with Goodyear Eagle NCT5`s I can now hear the engine instead of just road noise.

Tyre wear on the inside is usually caused bt toeing-out too much, so it's worth getting the tracking checked.

If the tyres are underinflated, it's more likely to cause wear on the outside, the natural result of built-in understeer.

Less likely is another geometry problem like suspension damage causing too much camber. Straddling speed humps has been suggested, but think you'd have to do 20,000 miles of continuous speedhump straddling to notice.

flamesuit on....this is just my opinon based on many, many tyres worn out....

I agree. Both edges worn would indicate slight upder inflation (I've just increase mine as the outer edges are wearing faster than the middle). The same on the front is normally due to scrubbing on full lock. Speed humps can't be the cause unless you're driving hundreds of miles over them. Are they particularly wide? 255s etc

Can Mattsurf tell us how much he paid for the 4 Avons please.
I fitted my W210 E220 CDI Auto Estate with Michelin Pilots at a cost of £98 each. They are quiet and very satisfactory. The last lot did 32,000 miles.

Fit Repair Bolts to correct camber angle

On the front - camber repair bolts 4no. will cost you about £25 inc VAT.

For me it has stopped the inside edge tyre wear, lightened the steering, stopped the pulling to the left and has cut down the road noise tremendously.

Ever since I did it - it feels like a new car should!

Problem was noted when I got the car at 45,000 miles. Dealerships won't sort suspension problems on the warranty. They just offer the 4 wheel alignment check and you pay. £80 a time then £99/hr + VAT to adjust anything. I wasn't up for paying.

It took a year and 25,000 miles later I found the solution and fitted them myself - it's easy. You can set up the toe-in with a tape measure. Toe-in should be 0 - 1 mm difference between front and back of tyre at 150mm above road level.

I'm still looking for the solution to the rear end - they don't do repair bolts for the back. I think the answer here is to pack/shim up the saggy/lowered suspension under the springs.

Hi
I paid £265 including Delivery + £40 fitting, so total £76.25 per wheel

After 1000 miles my observations are that the Avons are very quiet and have improved the ride tremendously. In the wet, the tyres are great, the steering does not tug when you go through puddles (and we have certainly had allot of rain recently!). I don't drive the car too hard, so cannot comment on grip, other than saying that the traction control light doesn't come on very often (With the old tyres, the traction control would always light up as I pulled off the round-about at the end of the M6 onto the A14).

On the down side, fuel economy is down by 2 or 3 MPG, however, this may be as a result of the very wet roads recently.

On my previous W124, I got more then 30,000 miles from a set of tyres. I cannot comment on wear on these ones, I hope to get more than 25k miles from a set

I am not sure what to do about the wear on the inside of the tyres. I think that I will get a 4 wheel alignment done. However, I am interested in the camber repair bolts - how do they work?

Matt
