Tyre wear and how far do you get on a set of tyres

I had a set of Michelin PS4s tyres fitted on the rear my car. The fronts were already PS4s and have lasted quite well.

Now, I have always been led to believe that Michelin tyres tend to last longer than other manufacturer's tyres, and everything I've seen online backs that up.

My rears have worn out in 5000 miles, I mean, they're down to the wear markers. I'm not a crazy driver, in fact, I drive mostly on cruise. I can drive spiritedly on the very rare occasion, but it is a very rare occasion. I know the car has 520BHP, but if you're not using it all the time, it makes no difference, does it?

I had some Rainsports on previously and they lasted about 8-9K miles.

What are other people getting from their rear tyres?

It's not the bhp but the torques that leaves your rubber behind on the road. My CLS has 450ft/lbs of torque and the rears (275/40) last about 10K - if I am careful

Edit just seen: The 216 has been mapped by Acid at MSL and has 500BHP with 623lb/ft torque and it feels like raw power (I like).

W204 C63 - Continental and Rainsport 3, both sets were circa 8k on the back. Fair bit of dual carriageway work, with twisties at either end.

Not sure the current beasty will do as "well" as it has a wedge more torque at the bottom end.

It does make a difference due to the torque. Also not all new tyres have 8mm. PS3 iirc, had 5.2mm on at new

My s350 is only shod with PS4’s and has done 11k and rears will probably see another 3k before even getting near the wear markers. That is no stranger to twice the legal limit and is in great health having only 60k on it now so it’s performance easily gets traction kicking in.

Having been in that trade for years and tested most premium and decent mid range stuff, I’ve found Goodyear Eagle to be the most consistent performance in every respect. I didn’t really rate Michelins until the PS4 came out as they would hate heat cycles, the difference in performance between new and 2mm was massive etc. PS4 rectified all that with great consistency, longevity like the Goodyear Eagle and just pipped it for 10/10ths driving.

Michelin Latitude Sport 3 lasted almost 44,000 miles on the rears (with 367bhp which I like to use from time to time )

If I'm honest, I would have expected about 10K on the rears and about 15K on the fronts.

Years ago MB would rotate tyres at each sevice. When I had my W124. Obv provided tyres are same size.

This was the norm to ensure even wear and longer tyre life.

I have also noticed many tyre manufactures provode less thread on new tyres (6mm cf to 8mm). This is mainly with the top range manufacturers.

The only car I had that liked new P Zeros was my W251. Every car I had with P zeros became much noisier with wear and worse in the rain.

In a former life as along distance courier in my Vito, admittedly mainly motorway and roman road driving, I often achieved 100k+ on a set of mid-range tyres.
Also when doing this type of driving, it was disciplined driving keeping in with the commercial trucks just doing 50ish mph so as to maximise mpg. Also at this sort of speed, it's quite stress free driving and you avoid the inevitable three car pile-ups in the outside lane on the motorways.
As for rotation I would start a tyre on the rear axle and, continually monitoring tyre depth, move from the back to the front offside and finally end up at the front nearside were it finally came to the end of its useful life. As there was a thread depth of 8 to 9mm I aimed for 15k miles for each mm of tread.

It might be worth considering tyres with an eV mark. These have been specifically formulated for use with electric vehicles due to the high torque figures.
I used to use Michelin for everything, but have moved over to Continental ContiSportContact 6 & 7. I've found these to give pretty decent grip and wear. They're not as soft as some of the Michelin PS4, certainly not as soft as Michelin SuperSport.
I find the Michelin a bit confusing as there are multiple types of PS4 and PS4s tyres floating around which have different Eu tyre ratings for wet grip and rolling resistance.

Those are much longer lasting compared to PS4
