Coming down the motorway the other day at a steady 80, sudden loud banging noise started. After stopping I couldn't see anything immediately but later found the front inner tyre, about an inch in width, had shred and was down to the metal.
At the dealership on the ramp we could see the same thing happening to the other front tyre on the inner track. Had two new front tyres put on and the wheel alignment checked by my favourite tyre place to find that the camber on the front n/s was out. I think the parameters for Merc is 1.3 outer limit and mine if 1.6. To pull it back I'm told requires new bolts but putting them in is time consuming. Mercedes are saying this is about 2-3 hours work and my tyre guys also said the same. Difference being that Mercedes is £95 per hour labour and the others are £40. The bolts are about £30 all in from both. Quite a saving for the same job but do I lose anything by not going to Merc?
It's a 2000 E320 CDI with 55k on the clock. Mostly motorway miles and otherwise drives impecably.
Question: Anyone else seen this happen before and what was the outcome?
