Or find 2 more 16" wheels in 7" wide

True but the chances of finding a match with the fronts are remote. Shame that when I messaged the seller he said they were all 7” but it turned out two were 8” and I wasn’t aware they would cause problems finding tyres.

Seems like for the maximum choice of winter or all season tyres then 7” wide R16 wheels all round is the best option. All part of the learning curve.

As I've posted a couple of times in this thread and been pondering on my choice for a while here are my tyres for the winter as opposed to winter tyres... set of four fitted today. Goodyear Efficient Grip 2.

Thought as we are both retired with a Co-op, Chinese, Indian, mini-mart, dentist, doctors, two pubs, two garages etc an easy walk within the village then we don't need to use the car on any particular day so summer tyres will suffice. Got a deal I happened across saving £200+ over the cheapest CrossClimate set too.

Fair choice if you will have a choice, but if you do think about taking a RWD car out in the snow / ice on those, tred very, very carefully..

Would have been sure you could have found good all seasons (Bridgestones?) in the right sizes, but most importantly, enjoy the car as we move into our Indian Summer....

I have GY EG Performance on the front of the SLK and am really happy with them, especially compared to the Hankooks they replaced, decent grip and a much nicer feel to the front, just waiting for the rears to wear out and I'll swop them to the same.

For future reference, is there s way of knowing what ET (offset) sizes are compatible with the CLK?

For example, whilst 7J ET31 wheels might fit, what other ET sizes will fit? There must be a minimum and maximum ET size?

Was wondering if there is a chart available similar to the wheel & tyre chart that was posted early in this thread?

I won't divert Dale's thread further re my "summer" tyre choice but would mention re purchase and fitting. I found the best deal on the day in my size was the mobile fitting Halfords Tyres on the Drive service. They were with me two days after online ordering with a clean well equipped vehicle and the guy was au-fait with every small detail that ticked all the correct tyre fitting elements. Very impressed... but I guess a lot might depend on the individual fitter.

Suited me as I mostly hate tyre centres when they say will you wait we'll only be 30mins.... then you're there 90mins with long periods unable to see any work being done on your vehicle.

I have, thank you, however I thought it just gave a listing of the wheels that can come fitted to the car as standard. I was of the belief that other offset sizes can also fit that aren't included on the list, or have I got that wrong?

From that link it gives the following 16" and 17" wheel widths and offsets for the fronts and rears..

A few mm offset (ET) will be fine generally as long as they clear the calipers and don't stick out too far but I wouldn't want to diverge too much from the manufacturers specs TBH and that list covers pretty much all variants.

Thanks, understood. I think I'm about there with fully understanding both the wheel size options and tyre size options. Quite confusing at first getting my head around the wheel width and offset sizes that will fit my CLK, and then the size of tyres that each wheel width can or cannot take. Then throw in a desire for winter tyres and suddenly that restricts you even further as not all sizes are available.

Going to look at another set of 4 wheels tomorrow that are 16" 7J ET37 that are going for a good price. They should take 205/55 winter tyres which seem readily available compared to other sizes.

Went and got this set of alloys this evening, all 16" 7J ET37 and come with 205/55 Continental winter tyres, not bad for £70 all in, though the tyres need inspecting and checking their age...

If less than 4mm of tread left they can be somewhat “interesting” ;)

To be honest I don't really like using 2nd hand tyres especially when bought blind from an unknown seller, so we may just end up replacing them. Shame though, as Continental Winter Contacts are quite expensive at around £130 per tyre, compared to other main brands of winter tyres such as Goodyear etc that can be around £100.

Not photographed was the loose tyre for the empty rim, brand new Pirelli winter tyre but is 20 yrs old. I think tyres are supposed to be replaced at 10 yrs regardless of condition?

That's a good price, is that with their £25 off a set of 4 promotion?

Test fitted one of the new wheels to the rear of my CLK just to check it fitted ok before buying a set of winter tyres

When I do come to fit them I was thinking of removing the plastic wheel arch liners so I can clean the inside of the arches and waxoil them, is it just a matter of removing these plastic bolts/nuts?
