I purchased a 1996 - C180 Automatic 2-3 months ago. It is a good car in good condition, low mileage. There are alloys on it with Low profile 18"-225 tyres.

I was thinking of having the damaged (kerbed) alloys refurbished and the tyre/alloy wheel place I visited recommended that I fit 18"-235 tyres to the rear which will protect the alloys and also give better handling etc.

That would leave the front with 18"-235's.

I would appreciate comments from the experts on this forum. Thanks.

Sorry - that would leave the front with 18"-225's, the 235's on the rear wheels.

so what size spare will you have?

Mixing can be fun, but maybe the trick would be to miss pavement?

Yes - would have been a good job if the previous owner had missed the pavement :)

If all the wheels are the same width, presumably 7.5", then personally I don't think there's much point; the handling/roadholding difference will be marginal at best, and probably imperceptible.
Second point that occurs to me is that its usually the front wheel that takes the knock, and the wider ones should be on the back.
There are some tyres that have a specially designed lip to help provide some protection if you catch a kerb, like the Dunlop SP Sport 9000.
Here's a link -

I'm not an expert but that's the way I'd go - no spare problems and you can rotate the tyres.
