Hi

I have EfficientGrip Performance 2 on the front and I now need new rear tyres and would like them all matching, for Mercedes CLK 2008, Rear tyre size 245 40 R17 Unfortunately, it seems they only have size up to 225 ‍♀️

My next choice would be Rainsport 3, but I can only find Rainsport 5, which I am not really keen on, as I think the Rainsport 3 has better grip.

Ideally, I would like Goodyear efficientgrip 2, or Rainsport 3, so I am a bit stuck. Is there a way round this?

I want something similar price and has good grip in wet weather.

Good you can help

Thanks

Your preferences are correct in order

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2
Uniroyal Rainsport 3
Uniroyal Rainsport 5

I would recommend in your situation the keenly priced Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 if available in
245 40 17

I have the GY F1 Asymmetric 5's on my E Class although in a different size. I can thoroughly recommend them.

In your size, fitted price all in

I have had Uniroyal RS3, RS5 and am currently using GY Eagle Assy 5.

The RS5 is better than the RS3 (now discontinued) and the GY better again, for £112 each fitted I would put the GY on then match the fronts next time.

Thanks everyone
I have booked in with national tyre and auto care. I used a discount code, so I am paying only £214 for both tyres.

May I ask, as I did not get the manual when I purchased my car.
The current rear size tyre is:
245 / 40 / 17 and 95
I don’t know what the 95 means, so I ordered the same. As there was a choice of 91 or 95.
Is that correct?

Thank you JBell, for sharing your experience, as from my research I got the impression Rainsport 3 were better then 5.
But as mentioned the gy eagle 5 are better still. Tyres are important for me as I am not confident driving rwd in wet weather.

Thanks again

Your research is correct as it's comparing many peoples opinion ( 313 people ) as opposed to one person J Bell's opinion .

Excellent price for the pair

95 is the load rating so keep it the same

No worries, the RS3 and 5 are incredible in the wet, but they are noisier than the GY due to larger gaps between the tread blocks.

I went with the GY this time as the price difference was minimal whereas the RS had been considerably cheaper in the past but they do wear quickly.

I bet all those 313 people have a good background in selling and fitting tyres as well as being able to compare them all on the same car

I have to admit I take those review sites with a pinch of salt.

What's good on one car can be rubbish on another. It all depends on the suspension setup.

I'm confused I too can't find the sizes you say are on the front for that particular tyre

I'd rather go with the same 4 tyres of the same brand and indeed the same type - even at different sizes it will likely drive better and be more balanced to have the same ones if fairly different in size

95 is a load rating - its about torque, braking and weight - higher the number the more it can cope with - but it alters handling characteristics and ride comfort - often BEST to use what the hand book says for load rating

one of my omeba's had a bunch of random brand 235s and the car was an utter pig of unbalanced incompetence - I put 4 brand new Michelin's on it and it was equally rubbish - suffered that for years - not realising they has dropped me from 95 to 93 load rating. Then went to four 101's on the budget conti brand and it was crisper turn in and less bad overall handling wise (but still awful) and ride was noticeably worse...

in the end, towards end of life I got a matched set of second hand goodyears of the exact manu spec and the car was utterly transformed - it was an utter joy to drive - perfect ride and handling - having stood almost unused for 18 months (after I got the S class) I drove it to the scrap yard - I should have (as I nearly did turned around and kept it) - it drove in ways this S class can only dream off. It was a vastly better car than a w221 S500 in nearly every possible way you can measure it

That's where the tyrereviews tests come in handy .

If the randoms are confirming what the measured conditions test results are finding.

why not go to a set of goodyear vector 4 seasons

and keep these for the back or the front for summer abuse

I don't think the 245/40 R17 is done in that tyre

I was looking the range is growing (and Michelin cross climate are on version 3 - cross climate came around 5 years ago, then cross climate plus 3 years ago (less snow capability swapped for better rain) and now cross climate 2

I was aiming for a set of vetcor 4s for my fathers car - but its the rob them blind size that only on goes on an omega, 5 series or e class so whilst almost a focus size its more than double the price for no reason at all

I've had GY Eagle F1 Assym on the S204 for a while (17" rims, 225.45 front and 245.40 rears), good grip, quiet, happy camper until first a rear (OS) let go, nothing visible on the visible part of the tyre until we took the wheel off, inner sidewall totally failed. Tyre had about 17k miles on it. Then front NS loosing pressure fairly rapidly, again sidewall failure, this time a small split. Had to replace the rears with same again as 200 miles from home and problems, fronts closer to home and not such a panic so fitted Michelin XClimates and am happy - except I can't get 245/40 R17's in XClimates so not sure what to go for when the rears give up.

The SLK also has 17's, came on Hankooks which were/are horrible, have already changed the fronts to GY Efficientgrip Performance 245/40, rears still have a load of life so loathe to replace until needed - or until I get fed up with the harsh ride!
