The time has come for me to buy new set of tyres. It looks like, if I go for a proper tyre like a Goodride 195 H600 (195/65) it's going to cost over a £100! (inc p&p).

...you mean mytyres.co.uk? (the .com bit takes you to an australian site)

mytyres.co.uk is where I was looking and it was still going to cost over £100 for four tyres (inc p&p)

I haven't looked at replacing tyres before and up until tonight I thought a tyre was for life not just for christmas.

I have had cars with silly power over the back end, and once lost the back end so I ended up going backwards down an urban dual carrage way, past a bus stop. I then had to drive the wrong way for about 20 meters to a junction to turn the right way again. The people at the bus stop didn'tbat an eyelid!

If i can.

Could I get some Five for the price of Four deal?

Didn't Goodrides used to be used in F1 until Bridgestone took over?

But they'd be a little too wide for turnips rims.

But knowing him, he'd be able to make it work. LOL

come on turnip

you can get some belting rubberware from Mytyres delivered to your door. I've been looking at the test results they provide, and I think my Michelin Pilots are in for some serious, and not as expensive competition when I renew later this year.
I did use part worns years ago, but I was forever going in for another one or two. It seems they are part worn in differing anounts and you will always end up needing another tyre soon.

I have the answer for MR T Sock.

get some rubberised paint and just slap it on your rims...cost about £20 for all wheels...and off you go...cheap see.

saw a honda something or other the other day.. went bouncing past at 4mph. met blue with tinted windows...really big huge silver wheels and paint masquarading as tyre.

drivers window was down but i think a small child was driving it as i could only see the baseball cap above the door line...probably why it was only doing 4mph

If you find a decent source of part worns - they can be a big saving - they come off ex fleet cars, which come in for a replacement tyre, and they will swap all 4 - leaving you with 3 tyres that have hardly been used - have been using this place in Langley near slough for years now, and just bought a W126 - drove it down to Le Mans last weekend - at high speed without an issue.

Part worn tyres are demonised unneccesarily a bit. Bear in mind that when you buy a used car you don't know the history of the tyres but I bet no one goes and replaces all 4 plus the spare 'just in case', yet these are effectively part worn tyres you're buying. For me the economics don't stack up - new tyres are not that expensive, for 'standard' sizes anyway. By the time you pay for fitting and balancing the saving for part worn is minimal when you take in to account the reduction in mileage you will get.

I haven't had any problems with budget tyres and have tended to go for them in the past. Not quite decided yet whether to or not on my current car though (C43).

some of those

Hankooks and Fuldas and Pneumants look very cost-effective. I think I'll punt out for a set on the 280 when they need redoing later this year. The tests on mytyres are very revealing.

Hi Myros. Did you read towards the end of http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=9983&highlight=tyresDavid and I had checked out, all those sites/tests.

Yea David
that sounds a better job. Maybe Michilin sold them so cheap to MB for OEM for new SL that they had to get their money back somehow. There is also a lot of people that will only buy OEM when replacing. Also if you damaged one, you couldn't really put a different one on.

I have read the actual road test report on the 4 top tyres and the sport PS2 only beat them by a whisker. The F1 GS D3 were actually better in the wet.

And the price difference is huge.

See this test sumary: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/bs_RE050A_rd.jsp
And all the graphs here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/bs_RE050A_rd_c.jsp
My conclusion would be the Eagle F1 GS D3's wins hands down, pipped by price.
If they were both the same price, I would veer towards the PS2's, but only just.
This appeared to be the best value ultra high performance tyre we could find.

PS I hope you're not putting those Hankocks on your SL.
