I don't know which wheel the car takes its Speedo reading from so might not actual alter the speedo but the front & rear axles will be spinning at different speeds so will confudle the ABS & ESP throwing up a fault code

Whydo you want to fit different sized tyres from standard?

Would be accurate if the tyre manufacturers kept to the stated widths and aspect ratios on the sidewall !

Staggered means just that, "Staggered". You could fit the same size as the Front Tyres, presumably 225/45x17 and the wheels will be rotating at the save speed, or fit the same the correct size Tyre for the Rim.
Fitting 245/45x17 on the rear could very possibly upset the ASR which is part of the ESP thinking that there is a differential between the Front and Rear Wheel speed which at worse could cause the engine reduce power, just like when you pull away too fast in the wet and the Triangle flashes and the feels like the brakes are being put on. But it will do this erratically. I know this because I bought a car whereby someone had fitted the incorrect Aspect Ratio Tyre to the Rear Wheels and the Triangle would flash and the car would try to slow down but all I was doing was accelerating normally. Really annoying so I just turned the ESP off until I could fit the correct size tyres.
I'm not saying it will do this, but you run the risk that it might and you've just wasted money on the wrong tyres and have to fork out eventually for the correct ones.
But at the end of the day it's just choice in the hope of saving a couple of bucks......???

the rears would be 245/45 which 4% more circufrence lower revs by 500or less
nothing to stree but if the info from the diff is altered i dont want to light up the dash or confuse the talk -talk boxes

Might be the reason OP is asking is the same as the problem I have, as I have the exact same staggered setup on both the S204 and the R171 SLK280. Having fitted Michelin Crossclimates to the front of the S204 I want the same tyre for the rears - not only do Michelin not offer that size (245/40 R17) but I cannot find an all seasons tyre in that size, closest I can find is 235/45 R17 where there's the same rolling circumference problem!

Apparently it's possible to fit 225/45 R17 to the 8 1/2J rear rims - but I wonder about rim protection and the effect of less rubber on the road at the rear driven wheels - and on the suspension.

Continental

They use different names simply because if they put "premium brand" names on them then no-one will pay the high prices for the others! Every premium company makes-or has made for them-budget ranges, have a look at this list of brands. EVENT Tyres are made in the Netherlands by Event Tyres part owned by Continental.

Founded in Asia in 2005, Event Tyres BV is a relatively young player in the budget passenger car and light truck tyre market. Using the very best raw materials and a state-of-the-art production process, Event Tyres BV provides an excellent range of modern patterns at competitive prices.

makes one wonder
