I have been offered a set of new nexen tyres but they are 205 /55 /16 and on my w211 Elegance 03, E270 cdi has got 225/55/16. Can I use these new tyres safely. Thanks for your assistance. Barrie.

There is also a comprehensive list in the owners handbook.

I think it would be under tired. I had 205 55 albeit 15" on a Triumph TR7.

Total diameter of the wheel will be smaller (the '55' is a percentage of the tyre width - norrower tyre for same ratio means a smaller wheel). So I guess the odometer and speedo will be out. The gearing will also change. A smaller diameter will mean quicker acceleration, but higher revs at any given (actual) speed. It might not be out by that much. But as others have said, check what the car can have, but the above will likely still apply (I can't imagine it auto corrects for different tyre sizes, so likely a change to the ECUs or whatever to tell the car what tyres are fitted).

I would say not.
Rotational diameter will be about 1" less than currently and thus your speedometer will be out, admittedly it will read high compared to actual road speed.
More importantly the tyres are a nearly 1 inch too narrow for the rims. I know that some people are happy with stretched tyres, but personally I wouldn't.

I had 205/55R16’s on my CLK, they were one of the options.

Hi recently put 255/35/19 on the rear of my E400 the car hated them came up with some torque limitation engine shut off codes, took it back to the tyre place kicked off and they put 255/30/19s on which we’re supposed to be on. The car immediately changed, speed was normal. And it was all because on an inch diameter which makes all the difference ;):p

There's also insurance implications as it's a 'modification'.

I would'nt mess with tyre sizes!
However, have just changed from 'runflat' to 'conventional' tyres, and went for Nexen N-Fera. Great tyres! Also have them on 96 M3
