UK Approved Used Car Warranty Question

I am currently considering purchase of a 2003 model E class saloon (only ca. 14,000 miles), but would like some information regarding the UK 1 year Approved Used Car Warranty. E.g.

a) Is the warranty underwritten by a third party (and if yes, by whom?)
b) How different is this from the first 3-year new car warranty program? For example, would it cover something like the air conditioning system? Or "minor" electrics such as heating and CD/radio?
c) Would it make sense to supplement it with a privately arranged warranty programme (e.g. Warrantywise)?

On the surface, the Approved Used Warranty looks good and it does include 1 year Roadside assistance and MOT cover as well, but I would appreciate a second opinion.

Thanks for any advice.

May I suggest that, if you search on here under 'Service Contract Plus', you will find a Mercedes scheme that may suit you and you may want to enter into as a supplement. A few members on here are on it, inc myself, and (hopefully speaking for other people), we think it's too good to be true.
The price that your dealer quotes should reflect the fact that a 1 year Approved Car warranty is going to be in place as well.
Regret I can't advise about the 1 year warranty itself, but if it's MB Approved scheme it should be OK.

MB Used car warranty scheme

Hi there,
I have just come the end of the first year of ownership of my c-class which came with the approved warranty.
The scheme is underwritten by mondial who I guess are pretty established in the business. My experience is thus:
1. Had an air con fault which at first was diagnosed as low gas, and refilled but at a cost to me of £90. (Gas not covered under warranty.)
2. It went wrong again a few weeks later and this time they discovered a leak....which they fixed. No charge. Still seems to working ok though.
3. Had a catalyst go just days before the warranty ran out - heard scary figures of £1500 being quoted if I was footing the bill. But they replaced it free. I was a happy bunny!

So warranty seems reasonable - my biggest problem has been my local dealers sluggishness in sorting the problems. (Maybe because I used a different MB dealer for the warranty work - I bought the car in London, not where I live). Hope this is useful.

Thanks Mark/David,

The warranty sounds iron clad so I'll probably take the plunge this week and get the car!

Question for Mark, is the warranty extendable, or do you plan to take out your own private warranty scheme?

Regards

Greg

Hello there yourself.
I'm not a merc mechanic, so I'm rather thrilled to be asked a question personally. All the other guys, Black 55, Television, Parrot, jiberks, the man in the Spanish Mountains and ALL others not forgetting Rory/Bolide/jibc/ Xtractorfan/Aussie Nick will be GREEN with envy.
Oh yes, you wanted to know something..... I've used Blucol antifreeze for more than 40 years in many sorts of car and I think it's the best in the business. A bit hard to get hold of but accessory shops can order it in. Change every 2/3 years.
It's protected our Aluminium/Steel rotary Mazda perfectly for the last 23 years.

Don't forget that you will probably be eligible also for Merc Mobilife 30 year roadside assist, as long as your servicing stays in the dealer network.

Yes, that's another plus point. I checked the car's service history, which isn't much to begin with, since the mileage is low, but all have been performed at the franchised dealer workshop.

Used car warranty

Hello again,
Yes I recall being sent something through which gave me the chance to extend the warranty. I didn't go for it though because I have my own independent mechanics (Merc enthusiasts) who I have used for years.....and I think you needed to keep up the Merc dealer servicing under the extended warranty scheme, something I would prefer not to do.
I have mixed feelings about warranties you can purchase - feels to me they often try to wriggle - even MB wanted assurances from the dealer that the cat failure was not through damage. (Which it wasn't.)
Best of luck with the new car - still love mine despite the couple of problems.
