I am in the fortunate position of being able to purchase a friend's rot-free '71 280S here in S. Africa where I currently reside. I shall return to UK in 04 and want to confirm that the 280 will run happily on UK unleaded. I have read somewhere that all post 1970 MBs have strong enough valve seats to accept premium unleaded. Car will not do a lot of miles. Can anyone provided definitive advice please?

Tony,

Reading through the classic car mags over the years, it would appear that older Mercs do not have a problem running on unleaded.

Must admit to be slightly envious of being able to pick up a rust free older Merc, especially with the Sterling/Rand exchange rates as they are!

Cheers
