I recently became the proud owner of a Jan 08 C180 with the standard Audio 20 stereo. I had the dealer fit the Universal Media Interface (UMI). Everything works fine, the satnav is great, iPod and iPhone integration is great. However, despite the promise in the literature and on the MB website, it hasn't given me the ability to see navigation directions on the multifunction display (ie on the speedo). The colour display on the centre console works fine.

The MB Website states: "Clear menus and the address input are shown on your Audio 20 CD display. And on the instrument cluster display, your chosen route and the distance to your next turning point is highlighted through arrow navigation"

Well the bit about it giving arrow navigation on the instrument cluster display ain't working, and MB tech support are just shrugging their shoulders. Has the dealer failed to update the car's software? is my car just too early a version (it was built before the UMI was put on the market)? Thoughts anyone?

I would have thought the the navigation in the cluster would be a standard issue, this has been in use for a long time, I would have said it was an error in enabling on Star

welcome to the forum.

You could always ask " comand on line" for their opinion

I know that on the W203 if COMAND is retrofitted then the cluster display has to be enabled via StarDiagnose, but I think this is well understood by the dealers - perhaps the UMI retrofit into W204 is the same?

On my W203 I have to scroll through the cluster display to bring the nav guidance up, and perhaps for this reason I have to say that I *never* use the cluster display for navigation.

Hi Sapper

I picked up my 2009 C200 CDI last week with UMI upgrade and mine is the same as yours.

When I told the dealer it should come up on the cluster it was news to them. I am still waitng for a response.

I have a 2008 (latest model) C220 Cdi and have had a UMI fitted. I certainly DO get the navigation shown in the instrument cluster and very useful it is too. Access to it is via the Menu in the cluster under NAV. Your dealer shoudl have checked and ensured this does indeed work.

I have just taken delivery of a new c250cdi with the UMI fitted by the dealer.
On the Sat nav the voice is not working which they are looking into but havent responded yet. The guidance is not showing in the instrument cluster as per comments above yet the dealer states it is not possible with the UMI. Finally can anyone help on the TMC. What is it supposed to do. Whenever I press TMC on the menu it states no messages even when sat in as traffic jam. There is no traffic info showing on the screen ie yellow or red cars as the Comand system does. Am I misunderstanding how this should work?

I apologise if this has been mentioned on another thread and if so could someone let me have a link.

I can assure you that it is possible to view the navigation guidance in the instrument cluster. I have a W204 C Class so I am sure it would work on your slightly newer car. Yuor dealer has to set this up on STAR. Also I think that you may need to have your car radio set for TMC's; mine always is so I never experienced a problem. Quite often clicking on TMC on the UMI will give a No Message statement but I can assure you that at times there is a list of delays etc. Try it when you have actaully plugged in a route and then you should get any appropriate TMC's along the route set.

Thanks for all your replies.
I have been through the manual over and over and still cant get the TMC to work.
There is a fault on the voice that will hopefully be sorted this week by the dealer so maybe the TMC issue is connected.
Can anybody tell me the menu options to check under so I can make sure the radio is activated to receive the messages?

With the new W204 (and the new cars coming out) they need SCN coding to enable numerous features. The UMI needs to be SCN coded so that the cluster is enabled. It is no longer possible to simply enable options in STAR. Mercedes are tightening up all retrofitting.

The proceedure for SCN coding is to have the cars VDOK updated. You need to be a main dealer and/or registered independent with a genuine supported STAR system to do this. Once the update is done you then need to use your STAR system to SCN code the cluster and the head unit. This needs you to be online to Mercedes Benz with your supported system. Using your login details you then code the car.

The fact that there is no sound probably means the dealer didnt fit the separate speaker that comes with the kit.

Alfie - I agree. Also to be honest the instruction manual is pretty awful. Hopefully this will be improved to make it more comprehensive. I chose the UMI rather than COMAND and I must admit it is very good and a neat piece of kit.

The UMI does show road speed limits but certainly not as many as using say a TomTom and the road speeds are only shown when a route has been input. I would like to see this even in normal (non-route) mode. An audible warning would also be great if the spead limit is being exceeded. Plus the ability to update with speed cameras etc. Does COMAND Satnav have these features?

You do not say what year the car is,,on the earlier versions the TMC has to be activated within the radio station menu and a station chosen to receive TMC perhaps Alfie can comment on this

Okay. The UMI is a nice piece of kit as it offers full 7 digit postcodes which the comand in a W204 doesnt do. I suspect that MB will release an update for comand soon so that it does though.

The really nice part about UMI is the price compared to Comand.

Now, there were some early versions of the UMI kit that didnt have TMC on them. It may be worth asking the dealer which one they fitted. As far as I am aware the TMC reception is not enabled or disabled by the user. Its just there.

I've fitted a few of these now to W204's and people seem very happy with them. One word of caution for anyone performing this themselves, the instructions in WIS are wrong. If you install it like they say you will get nothing on the screen at all. Oh and of course you will need SCN coding.

Its a c250cdi Sport October 2009. I will be pretty annoyed if the UMI is an older version as it was dealer fitted the day before I took delivery of the car. It is going into the dealer this week - no doubt to have the speaker fitted which they are not admitting to have forgotten!

They will sort it out,,and no, you cannot have an older system than the car was designed for so no worries there

Don't worry! My UMI was fitted in February this year and it came with TMC etc. Yours should just need a dealer rectification on STAR etc. Pretty poor show that the dealer did not test this in the first place; no doubt they will offer you a nice prezzie to apologise for your frustration!
