Hi,
Following replacement of new key and barrel, everything was put together, but the steering was still dead locked. Can anyone please tell me how to release the steering deadlock on a E230 W124 1996 automatic.
The steering column is an aluminium cased and has moters on the side.
Where the key is supposed to go in, we have tried to turn this to disengage the steering, but it only turn so far and does not disengage.
The car has been off the road for a month now , and I am need to get it back before the garage charges me an arm and leg.

Dont know if I will find something. the steering should have been unlocked before you took the old switch out.

I guess your guys know there is an interlock between the gearbox and key barrel for the safety device which means you cannot start car unless it is in P.

Also you cannot take key out unless it is in P.

I would guess it is all to do with that interlink which thay may not understand.

Are they a Merc specialist ? They should be if you want proper service.

The whole of the steering column is out and the cable from the gearbox to the steering is out at the moment. we have not put it together yet. We were just trying to get the steering lock to release before we put in back in. On the other steering columns, non-aluminium, you can turn the engage and disengage the steering lock by turning it with a screwdriver, but on my E230 , it does not turn much, it need to turn a lot more to release the steering lock. Does anyone have a diagram which shows how the steering lock should be released.

Hi Just an update, we put everything back again and now the key does not turn in the barrel. I am so getting fed up with this that I am now thinking about a new steering column to go with the new key barrel, so that at least we know it cannot be nothing else to go wrong. I dont know if we will hit the same problem again with the key not turning again.

Reading this it says. the steering lock must not be turned out of position ! without the ign switch otherwise the steering lock locks in such a way that it cannot be released

Not familiar with the E230 on my C230 1998 vintage the steering lock actually unlocks electronically as soon as the "key" is placed in the reciever ie before any turning of the key but this obviously may be a different system. My key is the 3 button fob type

This car is said to be a 1996 124 and the info I have given is for a 124, as you say ultymate the 210 is a different system, you have the EIS switch and this one is just the barrel, I asked for the VIN but never got it

No need to start a new thread. Malcolm will just have to re-start his research on your car.

Help Needed Asap

Hi ,
Need to release steering lock ASAP, as my other car has gone up the creak with a broken timing belt. I need to get this on the road as soon as possible, and I need to know if I have to put in a new steering column or not. I need the car working by the end of the today. ALL YOU MERC guys out there, this is you chance to put all that knowledge to the test.

Many thanks

Are there any instructions on how to dismantle the steering column and put everything back so that I can follow the sequence myself to be sure that deadlock is not caused by reassembly process.
