This seems to be the nor these days, locks get gummed up with road grime. Insert WD40 into the lock and let it soak in for a short time. A good be of wriggling (with the key blade) and some slight persuasion should see it free up.....Hopefully.

I thought it was simply a statement that the person had chosen to share with us for their first post, because there is no indication of it being a question or asking for help etc. :p

Don’t forget the addition of an electric toothbrush minus head applied to metal key. The vibrations help loosen up the lock. A hairdryer, NOT a heat gun, may also help. Damp in the lock can freeze. I had to do that to the equipment shed locks. Dry graphite powder in locks after For lubrication.

I am unable to open my boot to reach my battery. The emergency key which has worked in the past is not releasing the boot. Any suggestions as to what can be done to overcome the problem?

Not sure if your 220 has them, but my S204 has emergency battery connections under the bonnet where you can connect a battery conditioner, charger or jump leads and, for example, activate the locks from the car key. A while ago I had a similar problem, S204 emergency tailgate release is from the inside, battery was flat but I was able, with the emergency key, to open the driver's door, then the bonnet, put power to the emergency jump points and open the tailgate using the button on the key as usual! I keep the emergency lock in the drivers door lubricated and checked periodically in case it happens again!!

Thank you 00slk, AndySlade and Chrishazzle for your moral support. WD40, patience, and violent manipulation of the key allowed me to open the boot. Lubricating upwards into a vertical slot is always interesting. I will definitely also lubricate the emergency lock on the drivers door.

That's good news, sometimes my input is on a better note than my usual input
