Can anyone help?
The horn on my '88 SL 300 has always been sensitive but now it keeps sounding whenever the steering wheel is pressed or goes over a traffic hump. And then suddenly it's fine for a couple of days and then plays up again. I've tried prying the horn pad off the steering wheel to have a look, but the horn keeps sounding and I look like a car thief! Help!

Uncontrollable car horn!

Could you remove the fuse for the horn, or disconnect the battery, or remove the relay, or unplug the wire at the horn or.....

Then dismantle the steering wheel.

It could be a short elsewhere in the system, of course - not at the steering wheel.

Uncontrollable car horn!

I had that problem on a previous car (VW Corrado) the auto electrician took a while to find the cause. It was a collapsed indicator switch at the end of the stalk causing a short through the column wiring (suprisingly the indicators worked fine....?!).

So don't be put off if it's not the horn spring (Andy's right that's what it usually is), a good electrician should find it fairly swiftly.

Hope this helps
