Hi All
having been snowed in I've been having good fun today cleaning my oil soaked loom and gearbox ECU from my 2001 230CLK convertible and decided to clean my engine ECU also. I understand that the oil gets into it from the crank sensor wiring but perhaps someone could explain to me where the wiring goes to from each section/segment on my engine ECU. There are 5 sections on it which, looking from the top, are as follows

outer left - 9 flat connectors/pins
inner left - spare with a plastic guide pin
centre - largest socket with 3 plastic guide pins and about 52 small round pins
inside right - 2 plastic gide pins and 40 pins
outside right - 9 flat connectors/pins

and specifically which is the one from the crank sensor thats causing all this grief!!
many thanks

It is the crankshaft adjustment solenoid number 68 in the link which may cause some problems on your car. Check the plug to this. Its normally the first 2 plugs on the control unit that have oil in them. You will see that half the plugs on one side of the control unit go to the engine, and the other go the car. its the ones which go to the engine which may have problems!

Thanks guys for the feedback. Have removed the engine ECU and cleaned it as best I can. It seems very much a sealed unit but no obvious signs of oil in it but plenty, as you say, around the connectors. Is all the oil coming from the one source i.e. the crankshaft adjustment solenoid or is some coming from somewhere else and secondly, is it likely to be seeping towards something else for which I would need a re-mortgage to replace but which I could take preventative measures now. Thanks again.

Have you changed the seal for the cam adjuster,, the wires get full of oil and it comes out for some time,,normally one changes the harness

Interesting thought Television. There are only 2 wires on the adjuster so would it be fair to say that the creeping black death is only wandering down these two wires. Green/red and brown/white i think.

It will go away, but when it is still coming out it can get into the MAF, its get burnt in the engine and this contaminates the O2 sensor and then the light comes on, this does burn off again often and the light goes out once the O2 sensor has gone back to its stored value setting
