you have to excuss Landover, he's an expert at stating the obvious! Your car and the manual are from the pre unleaded era, at least in the UK. 5 star was leaded and doesnt have an unleaded equivalent. I assume that you have only just bought the car, what did the previous owner use? check the inside of the fuel filler flap, where it gives the tyre pressures, does it mention fuel? It may be in german but it will be clear if it can take unleaded. finally do a serch on the forum because this subject gets a lot of coverage.

Dont talk so much wet .The car is too old to have unleaded marked on fuel filler flap.

Landover,

are you saying that unleaded fuel didnt exist in 1979, that this car cant run on unleaded or that MB didnt put info about fuel on their cars this long ago?

Unleaded fuel was introduced in 1986.
His car can run on unleaded.
And No it will not mention unleaded on the fuel flap
.

If you don't understand I can take you through it one word at a time

Gedhewitt - dont worry you havent started an argument, just identified a plonker!

Landover,

You are correct that unleaded first appeared in the UK in 85/86, this was due to EU legislation. the only cars that were really ready initially (in the main) were for the Japanese and American markets. Both these markets had had unleaded since 1970.

Now this may come as a suprise to you but the target market for SL / SEL's wasnt the UK, it was the US west coast. And they had first had real emission controls starting with the clean air act of 1970. This resulted in MB first fitting exhaust cleaning equipment in US spec SL's in 1973, an early attempt at a cat. These devices was called an after burners, but I dont think this meant that flames came out of the back!

Although only US spec cars actually had the emission controls fitted all the engines could handle unleaded, and are clearly marked on the fuel filler cap. This is in keeping with Hondas of the same era which I think arrived tuned to run on low ocatane fuel - the old two star.

I assume that the above is not too complex for you Landover and that I can now expect an apology.

NO problem Your car would be better with super unleaded. You didn't start an argument It's just mic who cant read .Even when you do it in red for him. He will probably come back and contradict what i have just said.
PS just for the record can you tell me what is wrote on your petrol flap .
Thanks Land Rover.
