Chancellor Alistair Darling added to the pressure on the oil companies to pass on the falling price of crude oil after BP and Shell reported record quarterly profits last month and today the AA today called for prices to be cut to at least the 2006/2007 level of 88.3 pence per litre.

And he is doing this out of sympathy for the motorist ?

NO. He wants the price down so he can stick on 3p a litre duty and it won't look so bad on the forecourt display.By the way, I drove to Newcastle and back yesterday and was still seeing diesel at £1.11.9 . What a national scandal.

That's nothing! £1.24 per litre in the little country petrol stations round here for derv and £1.11 for UL.
