Unusual tyre wear on E320 CDI Estate

My 02 reg E320 (71 000 miles) has used the inside shoulder of its tyres very heavily. The tracking appears to be fine (runs straight). When I was getting the tyres changed, I asked the tyre-change chap to check for any play. There was noticeable in-out play when holding the top and bottom of the discs (wheels off). It was more noticeable when the wheels were back on. Does this mean BOTH front bearings are on their way? Could it be ball joints? If it is bearings, can they be tightened (taper bearings), or are they pressed types? Please help!

Hello and welcome,, this can be normal and the best way of solving it is to change the tyres from front to back, its to do with the camber angle and not easy to change

I have edited thanks to stiversvelo post below,,yes the wheel bearings would allow the wheels to tip out more at the bottom, and thank you

I had exactly the same problem (same car), tightened up the bearing & made a lot of difference but still got poor wear. With new tyres they said the tracking was good but I still could see inner edge wearing. One day I was passing a recommended specialist sports tyre co with lazer allignment gear (the other one had it aswell!), they checked it and found 3 wheels out, was expensive to do, around a £100. This seems to have sorted out the problem & improved the drive, but need to get more miles on the front tyres to tell.

Most probably front ball joints worn ..the other thing you have to do is as malcolm suggests replace or change over the tyres cos they will continue to wear in the uneven pattern even tho you get the problem fixed

Thanks for the advice - at least it gives me some stuff to try!
