I now have a better picture. MBenz UK (after many emails and phone calls) asked Western Mercedes Edinburgh to carry out a comprehensive test and the result is as follows-

Star test ,compression test,Removed the cylinder head and valves for inspection

The fault with your engine is valve guide wear and carbon build up ,which results in Leaky valve seat rings thus causing the engine to run rough and the
Engine Management light to illuminate.

This is the same problem as reported my many other owners.

I have got a quote for repair from Western Mercedes Edinburgh!

£1989.75 + VAT Parts
£1205.84 + Vat Labour

Total including VAT £3754.81

My contribution is £1759.73 inc vat

Mercedes Benz Goodwill will cover the remainder!!!

I am not happy with this and have written to MB UK about it.
What should I be doing?

Take to another MB independent and get cheaper labour charge and ask Mercedes to pay their goodwill amount to me directly?

55% isn't a bad opeining offer but you are under no obligation to accept it. Say, thanks but the offer isn't good enough. Please go back and improve it. You're in touch with a number of people on the internet that have had much better contributions that that. The fault was entirely predictable in that they knew about this issue whist the warranty was in force and in your view they should have recalled the car whilst under warranty.

If that fails, perhaps try the percentage basis. The head should be good for 200k miles so you got 25% of it's use so thats what you pay.

Just keep playing, the game isn't over yet.
It took my friend 2 weeks of this before he got an acceptable offer from Audi.
