Updates to maps

Hi all. I have a second-hand E 220 BlueTEC Estate AMG Night Edition. Reg HG15 HSX.

Is it possible to update the built in navigation systme please?

The short answer is yes. How you do it depends on whether you have the COMAND or the Garmin SD card navigation systems. If you have COMAND then it would have had 3 years worth of free map updates, so yours ought to be reasonably up to date. If the map updates have not been done by the dealer (not unknown, apparently) you might be able to argue that they should now be done foc - but don't hold your breath. Your MB dealer can perform the updates. Alternatively, these people are highly regarded and can probably help - https://www.commandonline.co.uk/. Let them have your VIN and they will be able to advise. For the Garmin system there were no free updates and I believe updating requires you to buy a SD card with the latest map version from your MB dealer, although I might be wrong and an online update could be obtained. Have you checked what map version you have?

No, Garmin map pilot if you don’t go for Comand online

Not the best system for updates, I updated mine once but not anymore. How do you find it?

They don't sell any update packages per se, they just sell new maps, firmware updates are free and currently the European package is around £80.00, as mapping systems go it's fine, it gets me from A to B without any major difficulties.

Just the faff of having to remove the device and plug into a laptop. Don't they build a new map updates once a year?

I had to negotiate a replacement cartridge when I bought the car in September last Year as the previous owner took the one fitted, and when I registered it I had three Months to download the latest Map which is still current, I just looked, European map package 2018/2019 V17.0 (Q4/2017) FAQ on the site says up to two updates per Annum so I guess they are overdue? I think £80.00 is still expensive for a map update but a damn site more cost effective than the £600.00 AUDI wanted back in 2012 for my A6!
It is a bit of a performance but I've got into the habit of disconnecting my Sat-Nav cartridge and Dashcam and removing them from the car so they're not tempting the hooligans into having a looksee as I don't usually garage my car overnight.

Yeah, some of these map updates are silly money. I now use either Google maps or Waze. My last update was 2017/18.

current maps for both W221 and W211 are Nov 2017 and Dec 2017 files... so Q4 2017 probably is current for yours too.

New "year 2020 mapping" will be out shortly, based on Nov 2018 data so the new roundabout at Beaconsfield will still be missing in 18 months time... that's if they bother, a roundabout in Slough made in to a hamburger one with lights 3 years on is still showing as a standard roundabout.... its pathetic really

If you have COMAND as the system boots you will see a message something like "Do not let COMAND distract you".
