Bought a couple of DVD's from a well reviewed retailer which include instructions to leave engine running for up to 2hrs while first DVD loads.

Is it ok to leave a car running for 2hrs?...

It is, although you’re better off keeping a 12v source on the battery

Start car, connect battery charger to battery and switch on, switch engine off but leave key in position 2 so Comand does not shut down. DVD1 takes 1 1/2-1 3/4 hours to load, DVD2 is 1/2 hour or so. Hopefully you have somewhere safe so you can leave car unlocked and key in while this happens!

Option 2 - if you have a 2-2 1/2 hour drive to take where you do not need the satnav - and do the update on the road while driving.

Hope they're proper MB original DVD's as aftermarket copies may give problems all the way from not loading to bricking your Comand system! I've done the NTG4 in my S204 a couple of times (3rd time was by comand.co.uk when they upgraded the early HDD on my system to the later version), and the NTG2.5 on my SLK once, but always with genuine MB DVD's.

That seems a hell of a long time.
I updated with latest disc available for my CLK - 209 a few years ago it took around 10 minutes.

Have you ever driven for more than two hours.....

Leave a charget on your car.

My NTG2.5 took well over 1.5 hours to update. COMAND units drain juice.

Hmmm thanks I only have a Noco GB40 for flat battery eventualities...will go buy a charger...is it ok to connect it via the handy red tab and negative screw thing or does it need attaching to the battery direct?..nervous as heck when it come to electronics!

You can indeed use the posts you mention. That is why they are there.
Make sure you connect/remove in the right order and you will be right as rain.

Attach Cables
Connect the alligator clips. There should be a black clip and a red clip. Take the red or positive cable and attach it to the positive terminal of the battery to be charged. Once you have ensured you have a solid connection, connect the black, negative wire to your ground location located in step 2. It is important to ensure that this negative wire is solidly attached before plugging in your charger. Do not touch the wires while the charger is plugged in and turned on, as serious shock or injury may occur.

My comments above are purely concerning updating the NTG4 on my 2008 S204 (which I've owned since March 2012) and the NTG2.5 on my 2008 SLK (which I've owned since November 2019) - so updating other systems/cars may well be different, I can only speak from personal experience! Initially my 204 had the HDD with a small nav partition which would not accept updates later than 2015, I had comand.co.uk replace the HDD and update the system to the 2019 maps (and have seen nothing about further updates being available). At the same time comand.co.uk updated the SLK comand with the 2009 hardware update that MB North Wales (supplying dealer) had not installed while servicing the car during its first about 5 years! This allowed me to install the 2019 update - and again I know of no further update to the nav maps!
