Does anyone have any experience of having upgraded the ECU? I am looking at an upgrade for my E320 cdi which will increase power to 240 bhp /torque to 406 lb/ft and 6-8% fuel saving.

Hi Arthur,

Who is the up grade carried out by or supplied by. I would be interested to know. We are contemplating taking on a Super Chips franchise in the new year. I been to their workshops and seen how they carry out their R&D. Very impresive.

Andy,
Upgrade is by Diesel Management Systems, advertised in Car magazine. This system does not replace your chip -it is in addition. They are contacting me in Jan to arrange installation/training at a new local  dealer (Lanark).
This system does not alter boost pressure etc- it regulates wastegate control/fuel etc

Arthur,

Have you done this yet? I've spoken to them and their price seems a little high in comparison with the other "plug-in boxes" on the market.

Hi all,

I was considering an upgrade but haven't as yet had the bottle to see it through. Having said that I can't really complain about the performance of our TD as, although it 's slow off the line, the in-gear acceleration is terrific.  Fuel economy could be better though.

From what I've read on these upgrades, I prefer the plug-in type as they can be removed fairly quickly and show little trace of installation - handy when servicing or selling the vehicle on to someone else.  The only downside I see to a Superchips upgrade is that they replace the actual chip, which is a fairly permanent affair.  I'm sure others will have different views.

My only hands-on experience of these things is having seen my brother install a "Tuning Box" on his VW TDi.  It was a straight forward job and the changes were subtle but exceptionally pleasing.  The increased torque made his people carrier a much easier/relaxed drive and improved his fuel economy in the process.

Diesel Car mag always seem to have a number of adverts for these things.   They've also tested converted cars from the likes of Superchips and Van Aaken. Also, every now and then, you can find second-hand items for sale in the private ads in the back pages.

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who's undertaken such an upgrade on their MB - particularly on diesels.

Hi Dave,

I visited Super Chips late last year with a view to taking on the franchise. I found them to be exceptionaly proffesional. They knew what they were  talking about. They had a vast array of equipment which they explained how it worked. And how their R&D was carried out. I had my 320CE chiped and again found the changes subtle but pleasent. They prefer diesels as the power gains are more substantial. Some of the vehicle are reprogramed via a serial port. And if your vehicle needed a replacement chip. Then you wouldn't even know where to look let alone anybody else being able to tell that is been touched. They give the old chip to you in a "natty" little case. So if you want it refitted then no problem. I would recommend them to any body who required more power and improvement in fuel consumption.

Hope I have been some help.

Hi Andy,
Superchips, what about Turbo boost? Did you check out how radical it was for diesels? I still have reservations &  have not had satisfactory answers from re chippers yet.

Hi Ernest

Like most of them they quote 30bhp as the expected increase. It seems that more is readily available, but this increase keeps the vehicle well inside normal operating perameters. IE you can't blow your engine up.

As I said I rate what they did and what they had to say. And the back up.

Vinay,

Check with the chip supplier again about the Bhp increase their chip could deliver on your specific model.

For what I know, it is virtually impossible to gain as much as 40 Bhp on any engine by simply upgrading the ECU unless of course it is a turbo charged one. In which case, ECU upgrade can indeed yield huge increase.

I have a C200 K coupe giving out 164 Bhp in stock form. To give it another 40 Bhp, the engine would need some modified pullies, ECU upgrade and an intercooler too. I looked at a couple of mercedes tuners and thats the level of performance their conversion could bring.

Otherwise, chip upgrade is an affordable and reliable upgrade. Easily installed or indeed removed if needed be the engine can be more responsive and any flat spot overcome by way of a simple chip change.
