What could I expect to gain if I sold my W210 320 Cdi (2000) estate and bought a Mercedes approved S320 Cdi 52 plate saloon. My car has a lot of extras, heated memory seats, climate, xenons etc.
Does the saloon self level?
I just fancied a change. Would the tax and parts cost more?

Do they (220) have all the same things/goodies mine does?(folding dimming mirrors, soft close boot, speed sensitive steering,rest/aux heater. Memory seats.
I take it they have the same engine and box? Do they suffer from rust issues? Are they quieter than the E.

Yes to everything on the right car :D,,I only buy loaded cars as there is more to go wrong and keep you busy.

Before you buy any 220 put the VIN number into theis site to see all of the extras

http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

It saves hours of running around looking at mis represented cars

Yes they do and they are quieter. Sadly some of them do suffer from rust, especially pre facelift models.

G-A-R-Y, I'm in the market for a E320CDI estate with all the goodies. What you got exactly and at what price?

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I think when mine dies (which knowing my luck will be 30 years!) the W220 320CDi is the one I'll be going for. Such a nice car.

Great cars the 220 S Class but the running costs are higher than your 210. There is rather a lot to go wrong on these and like Guru says, they do rust.

Hi Gary.

Yes to all, as others have said. I changed 2 years ago from a W211 320 CDI AG (my last company car for which the lease man wanted too much money) to a W220 (04/54) with half the miles and half the age, and not a lot more money.

Beautifully quiet drive, variable pneumatic suspension will suit most people. Be sure you get one with Xenon lights and, if you can stretch to it, go for after 04/04 and get the newer paint and less chance of rusting.

The fuel economy is about 3 mpg less (saloon v saloon), but I have seen 44.5 mpg on long journeys (brim to brim).

What you won't get is folding rear seats, so you lose the capacity to carry long or bulky objects.

There are good ones in the market at very competitive prices - good luck.

I have emailed the dealer from the add twice, to date no reply.

FAO: Bigboymod:
My car is a minter, FMBSH. New bonnet and tail gate (few spots of rust treated under warranty)
Extras I am aware of are, leather heated memory seats, LED folding dimming memory mirrors and interior,Bi xenons with washers, soft close tail gate, climate left and right, self levelling, speed sensitive steering, pair of original keys, all history, auto tiptronic five speed.
Price, as much as possible? 89k BTW. I thought I would just part exchange with the dealer.

Sorry to differ but it is not as simple as yes to all your questions.

Walnut trim, telephone pre -wiring, BiXenon lights, 6xCd changer and memory seats were all extra on the Dec 2005 S320cdi I bought. So check carefully would be my advice.

Running costs will be very similar to the E class if you have the same collection of goodies. My A service was £235 inc vat and the B service was £444 inc vat. Over 15k between services so a bit over 2p per mile.

Rust is not an issue if you buy MB approved with a proper service history as they come with a 30 year guarantee against rust from inside. And MB will fix if it happens.

But the sensible thing is to buy a 2003 built car -or later- as all 2003 production and onwards was fully galvanised. Check build date -not date of first registration.

The S class and CL class are built of a combination of aluminium and steel. For the aluminium components there is, of course, no galvanising process.

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1 2003 production onwards. During the previous quarter (Q4 2002) the process was gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

They are complex cars and you want to know all the recalls and updates have been done. Only a car with full MB service history can guarantee you get that.

It is important to bear in mind that on cars up to six years old, there are endless recalls and updates being done free by Mercedes only if the car is taken to an MB dealer for servicing. What Car have shown there are thousands of cars driving round in Britain that haven't even had the recalls done.

I post below the thread that shows all the updates on one of the most reliable cars ever made (according to US surveys) the 221 series latest S class. Feast your eyes on the amazing number of little tweaks and improvements they make -all free, of course, with the MB service. Colechelle told us in one posting that these updates go on for 6 years or even more sometimes.

Here is the link: -
http://www.mbworld.org/forums/new-s-class-w221/163014-mbusa-w221-bulletins-date.html

And I forgot to mention the 'goodwill' contributions you get to unexpected repairs/problems after the guarantee runs out, for which MB do bear in mind the service record on the car.
