My Engine management light as just come on. I telephoned a local independant Mercedes garage (South Wales) who quoted me a price of between £650-£1450 +VAT to solve the matter. They state that there is a common fault on the C Class 2001/51 plate where the "magnets!" in the front of the engine cause a slight oil leak that travels along the wiring loom into the ECU........Is this correct, have any other memebers experienced this problem. The cars running fine

This is a known problem. There is a plug in section of wiring loom that incorporates an 'oil stop' to prevent the problem. It is called 'starter line' by Mercedes. I have posted the part number before - will do a search for it. If this has already happened, but no untoward symptoms are seen, you may get away with replacing the section of loom to the ECU box, but it will cost a few quid. If the light has come on, it may be too late.....

very common problem, the loom part number starts 271........ you may get away with just main engine wiring loom and lambda sensor. on 1 car i actually opened up the ecu which was contaminated with oil and cleaned it with a solvent, worked ok afterwards.

Under the sales of goods act (providing you bought the goods from a registered trader/company or shop) if there is a common fault that MB know about and have passed this information on to any other parties that this is not normal wear & tear then you have rights for it to be fixed by your supplier under "Not Fit For Purpose" and don’t be fooled by warranty or guarantee periods! they do not have a leg to stand on in English Law and you have at least a 5 year minimum in which to make a claim.

The leakage starts in the camshaft solenoid adjuster, as mentioned above its part number A271 150 27 33 that needs to be replaced.

Also as above there is no reason why the ECU cannot be washed and cleaned

The oil gets onto the MAF and o2 sensor.

As Mr pig says this should not have happened and its not your fault, make a fuss

I had the 'magnets' and top starter lead replaced today £133. On the drive home from the garage the Engine management light came back on. I now have to replace Two lambda sensors at a cost of £300. Luckly the ECU was not contaminaed with oil
