By battery there is a plastic bag attached to the battery carrier (contains the wiring for the fuel pump), just make sure that isn't full of water/ terminal corrosion, if thats free of water and corrosion, then check the condition of the wiring to the fuel pump. Could be any number of things but thats just the common things I've seen that could cause your problem.

Don't know much about the sprinter but on other diesels the fault could point to the injection pump solenoid. When you turn the ignition on this activates the solenoid and allows the engine to start, when key is turned off this cuts off the fuel stopping the engine. Usual fault is either poor connection to or at solenoid or faulty solenoid.

Just a thought, the wiring to the needle motion sensor (injector with the wire) would also check that wire..... I believe potentionmeter can also cause this problem, I guess when all the visual observations have been done, probably be a good idea to get a diagnostic report.

The crank postion sensor is located above where the startermotor is bolted to the engine. Can't visually check the crank postion sensor as such, unless the wiring is shorting somewhere, or something has given it a clout from off the flywheel, which I've only ever seen once and that was on a cdi engine. With a meter you can check the readings, but it's an intermittant fault you have and easier to let the diagnostic machine look for it, if it's an electronic fault the machine should diagnose it.

i think your right will find some where local that can do the check and will post back diagnosis
