Am moving house today and so have a 200 mile drive to new home. But wife had to call out AA on way to old house as left hand indicator wouldnt cancel. Hazards work as does right had signal but left wont turn off. The AA (doh) didnt have any ideas. Eventually they removed the front and rear bulbs which left the interior light flashing v quick as one bulb left in (mirror). Any ideas? I can only assume it is the switch in the steering column area...? The car is 2001 E Class 320cdi estate. thanks

The switch is the biggest reason for this, they can be washed out with a good switch cleaner, its worth a try before replacing

I am afraid it does. it would appear the these switches either leak or they wear so the that the contacts short

thanks guys. Thankfully the AA have come good ! I have a parts and labour warranty with them for the princely sum of £60 pa or something. They are going to come to my house, low load the car to the local Merc dealer and then pay for the repair up to £500 worth. So wont be trying to fix it myself. The lcoal merc dealer said that if my last service was at MErc (ie all previous were) then they would have collected it for free BUT they wanted £200 to collect the car (which is 10 miles from the garage).
I must admit though that I am tempted to to trade the car - I have never had such a poor quality car. Even my 3 TVRs were better. OK it has great quality feel to it and drives well but I have lost count of the number of problems we have had (my dad owned the car from new and we are the 2nd owner). MAF, window mech, stuck in gear, unable to start, indicators sometimes dont work, windows sometimes get stuck down, the exhaust outlets need changing, rust etc etc..... An amazingly bad experience. Whereas my 94 BMW just soldiers on with virtually no failures in the 10 yrs I have had it. I think this is just a modern car thing! Its a shame but it looks like it is time to move on.
