Having seen the number of posts on various forums concerning automatic gearboxes, I thought this might be useful. I certainly found it helpful. Particularly the bit about valves and computer control near the end. http://www.familycar.com/Transmission.htm

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
That article is a load of rubbish. Everybody knows that automatic gearboxes use WITCHCRAFT to operate.

Its the only way to explain them.

Useful. Auto boxes are best left to dedicated repairers. Don't know of any garages who carry out repairs on the auto box internals. After 47 years as a Mechanic/Technician i would never attempt to repair an auto box.

Anybody got a layman's guide to the modern CVT auto boxes. The one on my A class is quite remarkable. It is as smooth as the box on the 220 series S class and smoother than the 7 speed box I tried over several weeks on the 221 series.

And the performance and fuel economy are not far off the manual version. Nice bit of kit.

Here's another website explaining how autos work

Hi All

Here's another popular website that describes how auomatic gearboxes work. This one employs animation ... try manually operating the gear shift in the schematic at the bottom of the first frame.

Wow what a brilliant website. And I put CVT into the search engine and it answers my earlier question about finding an explanation of the new CVT boxes. Here's the link: -
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cvt1.htm

Do scroll down. The diagrams are terrific. And click next to go on through the various types. What genius to come up with these. Such amazing simplicity.
