Hi guys

What is the general impression of the reliability of the V12, not the Bi-Turbo V12 but the earlier one.

Obviously it will be thirsty but would it be a fragile engine or pretty bombproof?

I have heard no complaints about the engine for reliability than any thing else.

It is expensive to maintain and many feel that the extra cost is not justified

I have known them to leak oil between the v's and the cost of repair is astronomical. (heads off etc)

I have been offered a stunning S600 V12 LWB saloon for no money at all. 2000 car. Just weighing up the pros and cons of it. Would only do 4/5000 miles per year in it. Low miles

I would go for it, with that sort on annual mileage the running costs aren't going to be that horrific - as said above just make sure that the engine is oil and water tight

I think that you are a man like me who enjoys these top of range cars, if the price is right why not enjoy it, for I know that you do. I have never been put off by stories or cost, take a chance

What can one say, argue ably one of the most luxury cars ever built, you must buy it, play for a couple of years and either keep it or pass it on. We are a long time dead and there is no lead free up there

Thanks for the support Malcolm, will keep you posted. I kind of agree and I put the chassis into the Russian site and it came back with 4 printed pages of spec!! :D
Going to cast my eye over it on Saturday. Going to call one of the techs from the local main dealer later to see what his view on the V12 is

Slightly off topic, but where on the Russian site do you put your chassis number for the spec?

BTW - agree with Malcolm, if the car's okay buy and enjoy it:D:D

If you don't mind me asking, how much is 'no money at all'? Just to put into context, the risk that you're taking. Not really a risk, as I agree with Malcolm - if you're not doing stop/start town driving with very low mpg resulting, I can imagine it would be heaven to drive if you like the big car experience!

Grab it!

I have one of those engines in my CL 600. It is an absolutely fabulous engine. I used the car daily up to a couple of months ago. I now only use it at the weekends and I look forward to Saturday mornings and leaving my brand new S Class at home!! The only major cost I incured with this car was the "ignition packs" I think that is what they are called. One failed and I got both replaced along with the 24 spark plugs, almost a day labour alone. I am getting 23 mpg from this car as I drive swiftly but smoothly. It is not unusual to see 28 mpg on a long run but it drinks petrol while idling in city traffic. I believe this is much better than the twin turbo model.
The other great thing about the 600 models of the era we are talking about is the ABC. These cars corner like nothing else I have ever driven and the long whele base on the S will help soak up any road impurities. It really will be like a magic carpet ride.Buy it. You owe it to yourself. Keep some money aside in case of repairs like the coil packs. they may have been replaced already, you might not have to spend the money. apart from that and the usual services my car has not missed a beat in the last 3 years I have had it.
Good luck with it.

Hi guys

thanks for the help and kind words but I decided not to go for the car. It was amazing spec but had been heavily smoked in and I am a non-smoker and hate the smell. Am sure I could have got it to smell better but you never really get rid of it. Plus there were some marks on the leather and although I was very very tempted, I would rather hold out for a minted one :(

What exactly do you mean by no money at all? With only 43k miles on the clock, the car is worth plenty.
