it could be deep inside the auto selector, have you had it apart?

jib:
no not yet. just a look around the outside.
there are a couple of switches on the left side of the housing but neither seem to correspond with reverse.

there doesn't appear to be a lot down inside the skeleton of the housing and no wires seem un accounted for.
by auto selector , i'm assuming you're referring to what i'd call the gear lever housing on the dash.

and:

thanks malcolm i'd appreciate your efforts

the switch is on the gearbox....about the size of the palm of your hand.

undid the 2 bolts and disconnect the cable at the splined shaft
don't worry about getting it back in the right place 'cos it's located by 2 flats.

drilled out the rivets ..7 off...split the cases and clean up the corroded contacts.

re- assembled with 4mm nuts and bolts instead of rivets...bunged it all back on, and job's a dream.

hope this helps any one else.

thanks guys

you've obviously seen my driving malcolm.

it should be the subject of another post..." clonking noise while reversing..."

well if they are going to put lamp posts so close to the road they've got to expect some casualties haven't they !

The static ones are OK, it is the mobile ones that get you.

In Sweden you do not have lamp posts along the kerb, they are always on the inside of a pavement
