We have a Merc V280 petrol with a mildly odd problem. The car drives fine for a while and then, randomly, the idle speed will jump suddenly from around 800 to around 3000. it will then stay at this idle speed until it is switched off. Upon trying to restart the vehicle it is a 50/50 chance that it will restart.

We have taken this vehicle back to Merc twice because of this so far. We've paid for Diagnostics TWICE! each time they have said 'oh well it might be this or this' we have replaced crankshaft sensor and let them mess about with the ECU. We just don't want to take it back to them again so we can waste another few hundred pounds and STILL not have them solve the problem!!!

So, does anyone here have any ideas?

it turned out in the end to be a resistance problem in the cable between the ECU and the temperature sensor. This was causing the ECU to think the engine was cold and thus Overfuel.

This was only discovered when we decided to take the vehicle to the Merc agents in Sheffield rather than the one in Chesterfield. My reccomendation: never go near the Merc agent in Chesterfield, they don't know their backsides from a hole in the ground :?
