Hi...just bought a W124 250D on a E plate...been looking at getting one for a while to run with veg oil.

It Has a few issues that all seem to stem to the Vacuum pump?

No servo assist on braking
Engine doesn't turn off when ignition off
Headlights level's
Autobox very clunky on up change.

Can anybody confirm it is the vacuum pump...and is it repairable or does it need replacing? I've check the NRV on the servo pipe and thats fine, when I removed the pipes off the pump there was no suction at all.

Where can I get one from and how much are they?

Regards
Phil

just in the process of replacing one today. parts on order so will know the cost tommorow. sounds like the pump has fallen to bits. remove and collect all bits up, then inspect the circular cam for damage. just hope its not too badly scored as its the gear that drive the diesel pump and is a pain in a to change.

Phil H,

Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, but I suspect I've got vacuum issues too and I just want to run them by the good folk here to confirm.

Here's the story: '94 E300 Diesel estate - now at 217k miles.

Ever since I've had it it vibrates badly at idle - you feel yourself moving about in the drivers seat. Not sure if it eases as the revs rise. The engine has had the head off and some work carried out.

I noticed a while back that the headlight level adjuster (wheel to right of steering wheel) wasn't altering the headlight beam at all.

Just recently....I noticed that when I turn the heater fan off........the headlight beam drops! If I turn the fan on, well, the beam rises again. Some time ago a/the previous owner had some major work carried out on the air con.

I'm not noticing anything in particular wrt auto box shifts.

Are all these events likely to be a vacuum leak? Do you feel that a chase and replace of the vacuum hoses/connectors will likely do the trick? Or might I be in a similar situation to Phil H with a banjaxed pump?

Also, any hints, pointers, warnings regarding hunting down vacuum leaks would be greatly appreciated - I want to solve this one myself.

Edna'...

Well this hissing noise finally got to me tonight on the way home and out came the Stanley knife - this is the up/down headlight tilt switch but I could get into it to repair the thing

I am guessing there is some sort of diaphram in there which is broken.

I recently replaced the vac pump on my 300E estate and cured the run-on, brake servo loss etc.

I still get a bit of a vicious thump from the transmission on some gear changes, anyone suggest the most likey locations for a leak on the shift system? Most of it seems to be out of sight so a few clues would be appreciated.

May seem obvious, but have you checked the transmission fluid? My box was a bit harsh, especially on the up-changes & I found the fluid had gone very slightly brown. I had a complete change of fluid & the result is amazing - took a few miles to take full effect but the changes are now really smooth.

Thanks for that observation.

Mine is harshest on slow low load changes up the box. Under really heavy acceleration it is very smooth.

Will get the fluid checked or flushed.
