Vaneo, Ambiente 1596cc manual, 53 starts intermittently. AA man perplexed did all basic checks, thought it was starter motor until it suddenly started. Local mechanic thinks it is starter motor but not 100%. Ready to take out engine(!) to replace with new starter motor. The car already has an ongoing problem and has been in and out of Merc garage 12 times over two years - the interior light comes on and the doors unlock intermittently and they are unable to fix it. Has anyone had similar problems? Could it be a problem with alarm and immobiliser? HELP!!!

Thanks. Any ideas on the interior lights and unlocking doors? All door locks and looms have been replaced which cures the problem for a couple of months then we are back where we started again - very dangerous if driving at night.

Do not let someone charge you to remove engine just yet:shock::shock: Might be worth getting a second opinion here as I've never replaced a starter on a Vanio but I've done many on A-class's which "should" be the same. If so, it is NOT an engine out job!! MB's book time is 4 hours on a A-class.

Had a similar problem with mine (re lights). Mercededs ended up taking off one of the rear slidy doors to replace the contacts, and replaced a part of the alarm. This was fine for a couple of months, then started to re-occur. I sprayed wd40 on the push spring contacts on slidey doors, and pumped them with my finger to clean, and the problem goes away for a month or so.

Vaneo wont start intermittantly.

Hi there,

I have a Vaneo 53 plate which has had this exact same problem. About a year ago after many weeks of testing we paid to have the ignition relay and starter motor replaced which seemed to resolve the problem. Yesterday it started all over again. Intermittantly not stating. There is no noise when the ignition is turned. All lights, radio door locks function fine. Break down man was baffled. Jacked the ar up had a look underneath, depressed clutch and started. turned off and started a further 10 times with no problem. Am frightened to drive incase it does it again. Does anyone know if it is likely to be the starter motor again?

Cheers

It may have an internal relay whthin the engine control unit (some do). If it does this may be the fault. This can also be repaired too.

I suspect either the new starter is duff, the relay or ignition switch.
