Hi guys,

I don't know if I did the right thing by buying this beast, but love is blind. My reasons at the time were that it had 4 good alloys and new tyres, 3 months MOT left, the plate RJI 8717, and as the guy was only asking £395! (Anyone interested in the plate by the way??)

The problems start as follows:
The coil light stays on for 15-20 seconds. It starts first time usually, but I don't have that much patience. I thought the battery could be on its way out, or perhaps one/two/more of the plugs have blown, or can they just become slower with age?

The central locking doesn't work. A lot of the lines have been disconnected, but I am not sure that the engine/gearbox has been properly isolated. It is an auto, and changes late into second and early into 3rd. It's 0-60 time is also staggeringly slow (maybe 30-40s). Is this usual and can all these things be related?

The front wheels click slightly when pushed from side to side. Worn ball joints perhaps? Would this fail the MOT if it is only slight?

The dash has a connection problem. The speedo only registers above 30mph, and the fuel guage drops in and out without the reserve light coming on (as I found out when I ran out of fuel bringing it home). I was planning to remove the dash (push out from behind) and check the plugs for corrosion - any other pointers welcome.

The sunroof appears to be leaking as the back footwells are full of water. Looking at prevoius posts I am not alone and will have to check the drainage holes - god this site is useful. There is also a pool of water by the spare wheel - probably same again.

The interior is in a foul condition - wet dogs and cigarettes... The drivers seat is pretty knackered with tears and bad springs (160,000m and some fat owners!). My question is are the seats easy to replace. Can I use a seat from a 190e or a W124? Are there any other cars that use the same pattern for attatchment, without the poor comfort?

That's enough for now...Any help on any of these is much appreciated...

The glow plugs are in series. If one has blown then there is no chance of starting the car as those engines are reliant on a pre-heat

Water is probably coming into the the spare wheel area at the back of the estate window which has a tendency to corrode below it hidden by the chrome trim.

For some reson the rear door elements on the central locking system get a tiny split in the rubber boot. They are £17:50 (if plastc). + vat but MB will give you up to 15% off if you ask nicely.

Any Way got to go to Dublin now email me for any other enquiries.

Cheers Tim. Enjoy Dublin.

It passed it's MOT!!!! :D

Cleans up nicely as well. Can't wait to get it taxed and get out in it properly. When I have put a few miles on it I will reassess the problems.

Hi all,

Tim, I am not sure your are correct. I think you will find the the glow plugs are wired in parrallel. The very early 123's were in series as were the 114 or stroke 8's. But I think an 82 123 should be wired in parrallel. Any way. The glow plugs will take a long time to warm up. Very early technology.

As for the central locking there are probably loads of leaks on the central locking. By the sound of it there are plenty of vacuum pipes pulled off.

Regards

Having spent all day charging the battery up, it didnt have enough charge to turn the engine over more than a few times when it failed to start yesterday. It is clearly pretty old with corrosion on the terminals and is probably due a replacement. The glow plugs may be faster with a new battery...

I am saying that if you ask nicely any MB dealership I have been in will give you a 10% discount on the parts without question. If you have experienced any sort of problem they may at their discretion increase this to 15% depending upon who you are speaking to.

The MB dealership may even be cheeper the German and Swedish for parts depending what you want and the exchange rate at the time and you will get the original part. It becomes a stealership  when labour gets added.
