A quick question that I've not been able to answer, When do the new VED rates come in? Everything I find mentions 2009 but is it 1st Jan 09 or later in the year?

My E320 VED is due 01st Oct 09 at £115 for 6 months or £210 for a year. 2009 rates are £300 for a year and I wonder if I can get away with 6 months then a year at the old rates?

Thanks for that, now if I tax for 6 months from 1st Oct then it will be due again on 1st April 09. I know you can tax early but if you do is it at the old rate or the new rate?

As I understand it, the rate is whatever it is at the day you do it. So if you wanted maximum savings you tax now, then cash in 30-Mar and re-tax it straight away. That way you only pay the higher figure the following April.
Most people can't be bothered though.
If you tax it in Oct for 12 months it should cost you £210.

I've just spent 10 minutes on hold with the DVLA in Swansea and have been told the following. I can renew the VED as soon as the reminder comes through the post which is after the 5th and it will be at the current rate. If I renew with my V5 rather than the renewal notice then that can only be done 2 days prior to renewal date.
I asked about renewing in March 09 and was told that I can renew in March with the renewal form at the old rates. Therefore if I get this correct I will be able to renew in March 09 for £210 rather than £300. Meaning I will pay £80 less (£90 difference plus an additional £10 for having 6 months tax now)

I read somewhere you cannot re-tax in the same month, not sure if this is correct (could have been a proposal I read) but I would investigate before canceling just in case. You would have to apply for a SORN for the vehicle if untaxed.

I am in the same situation Blobcat and have been told by the DVLA exactly the same however my friendly postmaster tells me THEY have been given different info "if your tax expires on the 31st March 2009 your new tax will start on the 1st April so you will be charges at the new rate, despite when you renew it.

Quick update.

It worked :) renewed my VED last night at £210 so my 6 month plan worked. It won't be until next year that I get hit for the new charges and that will again be at the 2009 rate rather than the 2010 rate.

Then I must surrender mine soon and then re tax to get the same benefit

I thought the rates where as per those on Whatcar rather than Parkers.
I was expecting £405 on my old Omega, which I think I got from the DVLA site at the time. It helped convince my wife that I was being sensible by getting a lower emmision E320CDI!

Driving Licences Info

Heard on the local Radio Station that the 'old' paper license was soon to be illegal and not changing it would be an offense, so emailed the DVLA see below for there reply, note the reference to "road safety measure" suppose that is a politically correct way of saying illegals, "gypsy's tramps and thieves" will be easier to catch

Copy of actual email:-

"Thank you for your email

Compulsory surrender of old-form licences is a road safety measure aimed at ensuring that all drivers have modern, secure documents. The Road Safety Act 2006 gives DVLA a general power to recall paper licences, as well as older format photocards if a second generation of photocards is introduced.

However, further secondary legislation is needed before a compulsory recall exercise can be undertaken.

You are not required at present to exchange your paper licence for a photocard licence. However, if there are any changes to your personal details, i.e. name and / or address, or your licence has become defaced, you should apply for a new licence. You would then be issued a photocard licence."

I thought the rates were as per this for 2009 onwards which is why I taxed for 6 months and just renewed. The Direct Gov site still has the 2008 rates as they are still current. Although I have just found this page which confirms my initial thoughts. I don't know about the Parkers or What Car sites as they appear to be different to the Govenement pages.

I'm guessing then that yours is older than 1st March 2001 and over 1549 cc

That page is from 06 2008, things are on hold, I checked mine direct and the same as last year
