All those that use veggie oil, how old are your vehicles? ... Is there a risk in trying it?

best vehicles

most suitable vehicles are those with inline injector pumps, all through the nineties, youngest now at a guess will be 2001 5/6 cylinder either turbo or non

oil

Your best bet for used oil is probably a pub they tend to use liquid oil in their fryers and depending on how busy they are you should manage 10-30 litres/week

Fast food joints, etc the oil tends to get a lot of animal fat mixed in with it and quite a few use solid fat anyway so even if you get some from them it wont be liquid or very little then you have to dispose of the solids/sludge etc a lot of hassle

barring that i believe the chinkies use good oil and change it frequebntly so the pwawn cwackers dont discolour

clear

Having clocked up a few miles on Tesco's finest, I wanted to update on my findings.

There's no doubt the engine is running quieter but is also returning improved fuel economy. At a guess I would say around 10% better but this is only a guess.

Looking at Sun flower oil, it has a slightly lower calorific value than diesel.

http://www.jatrofuels.com/170-0-Calorific+Values.html

Jatropha oil seems to be the one to use, which compares favourable to diesel.

Mindful of the colder weather, I have left a jar of oil outside, but as yet it remains very liquid.

that oil will stay clear right through winter itll just need more petrol/diesel mixing with it as temps drop to keep viscosity right

buy a vehicle for £500-£1000 spend from £0-£1.20/litre on oil and depending on how many miles/week you do those are your risk/reward parameters

plenty of info both on this site and other specialist ones

If I had a vehicle I could experiment with, what mixture would you recommend, ratio.

ratio

in winter 50-75% oil 10-15% petrol , rest diesel in summer 10% petrol 90% oil roughly, I believe I read somewhere that 10% petrol reduces the oils viscosity by 50%, the idea is to get the oil mix somewhere near the viscosity of diesel to avoid possibility of drawing air / overworking the lift and injection pump and trying to avoid poor atomization on startup, which can lead to gumming issues and/or polymerisation of the engine oil ,thats done with the petrol diesel or by heating the oil

If you get a merc estate with saddle tanks just be aware that youll get balancing problems and the guage once at half full cant be relied on

yes

This works with petrol too?
Petrol thins it down? ...part of the mixture?

petrol, being thinner than diesel lowers the viscosity more for a given volume but up to a maximum of about 20% and even so preignition could become an issue at the higher ratio timing may need altering, as a rule 10% petrol with diesel oil mix works well make sure all glowplugs are working aswell

Transit (old story)

This made me laugh, probably why they have made it difficult to find online.

Tesco bans grocer from store for buying gallons of vegetable oil to power his delivery van claiming it is 'illegal'

Customer claimed he was banned from his local store

Supermarket bosses told him it was 'against the law' to buy vegetable oil for fuel

Tesco said it was 'investigating' the matter

A grocer claims supermarket staff banned him from his local store after he bought vegetable oil to use as fuel in his vehicle.
Chris Waites says managers at his local Tesco in Didcot, Oxfordshire, told him it was illegal for him to buy vegetable oil and use it as fuel in his delivery van.
He claims the ban came after he purchased six five-litre bottles of vegetable oil to fill up the van he uses for his grocery business.

The transit van has been adapted to run on vegetable oil. It is not thought to be illegal to purchase vegetable oil to be used as bio fuel.

Mr Waites said he clashed with staff at the store when he bought the bottles of oil and told them what he was using it for.

Tesco said it was investigating the matter and stressed that it does not prevent customers from buying products.

Lol I saw that as well, very closed minded of Tesco to accuse him of illegal activities!

You can now legally use a certain amount without issues (not sure but could be 2 or 3000 ltrs).
Ran my old e300 TD on 50 / 50 during warmer weather (10c plus) and 10% during colder months. No probs.
No mods kits etc

You are allowed to produce or use 2500Ltrs of Bio Fuel per year pre registered location, which can be Vegetable Oil or Home Brew Bio Diesel, without paying fuel duty.

That is the current law.

So, what kind of reduced MPG do you get using Veggie oil? ...I presume it's not as efficient has diesel?

yes it is legal to use up to 2500 litres, however If Im right I believe buried in legislation is the fact that your not allowed to use oil destined for human consumption

depends on the original vehicles consumption on diesel,as well as the oil type and whether its new or used, but as a rule its very similar to or slightly less than for diesel
