Hope someone can shed some light on this.

I am getting the message above occasionally. E Class Estate 212.

When I turn the key I get it but car doesn't rise until I start it. Is this normal? Normal as in won't rise until engine on.

Seems to be an instruction which doesn't follow through until you ignore it, as in don't wait!

TIA

Pretty sure that's correct.
It needs engine running to ensure sufficient power available to run the pump.
My R class won't run the air pump until the engine is on.

Seems like the rear suspension is loosing air when the car is stood you won’t normally get this message (I don’t) it’s a pre-cursor to the rear airbags failing so I’d sort it sooner rather than later before you burn the pump out or the car lets you down (forgive the pun)

I see lots of these estates in the station car park with the back end on the floor and they would have been parked for less than a typical working day.

Didn’t realise they had air suspension too.

I thought it was that but when I thought too much about the message I wondered. My indie had said the battery was a cause which then led me to think perhaps he was right if it wasn't rising without the engine.
Time for a change I think.

All the estates have self levelling rear suspension

The pump only runs when the engine is running.
That will pump up the air suspension units but doesn't solve the problem.
I don't believe that the battery has anything to do with it.

You have a leak in the system. It could be the air lines but is more likely the air suspension units that are leaking.
The air suspension units can be replaced at a parts cost of about £400 for named brand suppliers with good warranties. They can be done as a DIY job.

It's in an indie now. Fingers crossed!

The thing with MB airbag failures is that initially they are usually intermittent and lose air (due to a tear in the bag) depending on how the car is stood overnight so the dealer may find the car doesn’t lose air parked on the flat. Unfortunately the airbags are difficult to inspect on the E class unlike the similar set-up on the BMW 5 Series Touring when they are usually flagged up at MoT time.
