What is the general consensus on fitting drilled/vented discs to a C180K?

I'm hopefully doing the front pads tomorrow so this new found confidence has brought on more tempting upgrades to mind. I find my brakes aren't that great generally with not enough final bite esp when in traffic. I saw a C Class Saloon Sport Edition in the local showroom with what looked like 2 pot calipers with drilled and vented brakes and the hankering started. I spoke to the parts guy and he said they're different for every vehicle and they wouldn't fit mine. Is he right?

I know Television has stated on another thread that vented disc make a big difference but is this for B road work, high speed stops or even in town?

Furthermore can anyone recommend decent quality discs?

Thanks again guys.

Hi

I have the sport pack option on my C180K and that includes the vented/drilled brake discs. The brakes have great response.

Whether it is worth upgrading to them on your car really comes down to how much it's going to cost over and above the normal discs and will that really make enough of a noticeable difference for you.

Mine also has the brake callipers with 'Mercedes-Benz' lettering on - I'm no expert but theres a possibility you may need to upgrade the callipers at the same time to go with the discs - don't know.

You say you have a 2003 C180K, mine is one of the facelifted 2004 models, but I know Mercedes where doing the sport pack option on the C-Class before the facelift so I see no reason why you wont be able to get hold of discs that fit.

Good luck

hi
the purpose of drilled/vented discs is for cooling and to eliminate brake fade (by cooling) by increasing the cross sectional area of the disc and the air flow around the disc. This can also be helped by putting larger wheels on the vehicle.
If your looking for an improvement in traffic i think you,ll get better results using hi-performance brake pads. You could try ATE Power discs these are grooved (if they make them for your car) ATE are Mercedes OEM suppliers i,ve used them on mine (with OEM pads) and they gave the brakes some additional bite and they were only approx. a fiver more than standard discs

Thanks Bigasotonuk, I think I saw EuroParts selling these on ebay yesterday, but it stated suitable for C240 only. It seems obvious that the C240 should have larger discs but surely they should fit mine too? Shame as I just fitted Genuine merc pads today. If it contiues to annoy me I'll fit the ATE discs for £98 or so. How easy is it to upgrade calipers do you know?

If nothing else, consider upgrading from MB pads to something else just for the reduction in brake dust :) !

The one you see mentioned in the U.S. the most is the Axxis (Axxis/PBR/Repco) Deluxe Brake Pads. Not sure about availability outside of the U.S.

Here is a good summary that was posted in one of the other forums:

There are 3 different material.

1. PBR/Axxiss Ultimate.
For more performance application.

2. PBR/Axxiss Metal Master. Also dustless compare to the OEM pad.

3. PBR/Axxiss Deluxe plus.
The most rotor friendly of all. Has softer material. and the least dust,

Here is the comparison. http://www.zeckhausen.com/axxis_pads.htm#Compare

One thing about the Metal Master compare to the Deluxe plus is that the pad bite is less when it is cold, and it is not rotor friendly (harder compound material).

But if you looking for street pad, that perform like OEM, but without the dust and noise, get the "PBR/Axxiss Deluxe plus."

"PBR/Axxiss Deluxe plus" is an improvement over "PBR/Axxis Deluxe"

The standard disk will be vented, i boubt you can buy a car today thats not got vented front disks.

As for drilled i doubt it will make much difference, if anything in some circumstanced will reduce braking.

The holes in the disks allow water to escape on initial application of the brakes and slos to allow hot gas to escape and not build up between pad and disk.

Under normal driving you will probably never notice.

Drilld disks usually dont last as long and can also be prone to warping and craking especially if they are post drilled after casting rather than holes cast into them.

You will notice a diffence in a decent pad upgrade however.

Just my 2p worth.

I have a C180 Kompressor (05 plate) with the sports pack added. My front disks are drilled and I have the MB logo on the caliper. My brakes are beginning to bind a little and Im thinking I am due a change!

Does anyone know where the best place to source disks and Pads from, preferably NW UK? (no doubt that type fo question has been asked MANY times?!!! Sorry)

Also, does anyone have a guide to changing your own?

Thanks

Hi,
The Avantgarde with the sports pack has the Drilled/Vented discs. However the sport edition comes with the standard ones as its a part of the AMG body kit. Wonder why they dont have the vented discs as standard on the Sport Edition. It definitly looks sportier!
