So Im trying once more for a bit of help from the forum.
My Benz has developed a rattling sound when started in the mornings (covered 81 000 miles).
It only happens when the engine is cold and has stood for some time, like overnight.
It is a metal against metal rattling sound and goes away after about 5 seconds, maybe less.
I need your ideas on this urgently please.
Thx
D
(PS: My 1st thought was timing chain but looking at older posts I saw opinions that the chain will last the life span of the car)

engine knock

Hi mate
I had the same knocking problem and after ages searching on internet what is it all about I found that it is all about engine wear. After starting cold engine it takes aprox.5 seconds to lubricate your engine system. Really good explanation is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o47ub7ArDQ&feature=player_embedded
after ordering resurs on ebay i was amazed. I finally got rid of this knocking noise and my fuel consumption is just amazing now.
It might work for you mate, as it did for me

Eeuww!
Thx guys. Having it checked out at the moment and will report back.
Ive never owned a car with so much issues as a Benz.
It either squeeks or rattles or knocks or hisses or ticks or jerks or whines or or or. Its like a damn baby, always needs attention and nursing.
My old cars start and run and never complain.

Smart + others :)
Depends on if its a tapping or a rattle, these do suffer from worn/noisey timing chains on start up.

Well a report back as promised.
The timing chain and whatever goes with it were replaced at great cost and after standing overnight the noise is still there at startup.
Now Im told that the next thing to do is to replace the variable/adjuster mechanism (or whatever its called) that will double the bill.
I cannot throw more money at this problem so I have no alternative than to just take my car and pay for nothing.

I would tend to agree. Nosisy tappets tend to rear their head as a result of extended or neglected oil changes.

On my other car (a high performance Renault) it was a little noisey when I got it and the oil was black (it was a petrol also). I dropped the oil , changed the filter and susbstituted 1 of the 6 litres of engine oil I used to fill it with ATF. Ran it for near on 1k miles (it does longish journeys) dropped the oil and refilled with 100% engine oil and the tappety noise on a cold start disapeared. I have kept ontop of the oil and filter changes ever since and it has stayed away. I also moved from a 10w/40 to 5w/40 oil.

rattling engine

I have the same or similar clattering noise on starting up after not using the car for a day or two. It doesn't last more than a second or two. This is on a 500SL with 100,00 miles. It normally fires up first turn of engine, and I've always thought it's from the big ends, which after a few revolutions get oil pumped back into them. So I'm not that concerned.

Regards
Oliver

Well Im pleased to report that two days and two cold starts later the clattering noise is now gone in the mornings.
Like in absolutely disappeared, not even a slight ticking, like in the one day a major noise, the next day gone.
Of course Im happy and thank you very much to everyone who shared their ideas about the oil. Unfortunately it was too late to save me a bundle but its my own fault for being pushed into a different direction and I will write off the cost against school fees.
Fwiw, the oil that I could get hold of was Fuchs SuperSyn SL 5W40.
The top oils from Mobil seem to be very scarce in my neck of the woods.
My garage will from now on contain stocks of Supersyn, Delo400 and either high mileage GTX or Helix.
Just a last thought, I do get the impression that the engine runs noisier with the new oil, especially while idling or while running short distances in town.
I can hear a lot more moving parts now than before.
Also it has a loud whooo noise for the first few minutes after being started coming from the front left from something that looks like an air intake.
However, after a fast run for a few miles the engine runs smooth and quiet.
Thx again guys, much appreciated.
